Hi all, first time poster long time lurker - gotta fix the usual suspects on my 2KXL being a couple of cursor buttons and shift key..and a few others that are sticky as well.

Have found this particular thread invaluable, as well as enraging (but I will still need to get a few things from mpcstuff.com). I thought I should contribute something to this topic,

1. I found this handy chart on "another" MPC site, doesn't cover everything, but it seems to cover a few common things across various models:
http://www.mpchunter.com/replacement-parts/

2. The medium tact buttons on my 2KXL (drum pads, 16 levels etc) are the same size as the small ones (most would know this but I thought I would add it as I just had to take the panel off again to have another look derpy derp)

I have one more question, does anyone know the part # for the large tact buttons (eg: play/record etc) for the 2KXL? I can go through the Mouser.com list of 7 zillion, but I thought I would ask :)
(EDIT: found this after posting, I think this is it?):

Happy chopping to you all 8)

I see I got a Biiig reaction on here! Anyway. For those who come after this..

I got these switches from Jaycar electronics (like a techier Radio shack here in Australia) for about 80c each (about $10US for 15 of them as opposed to $8 each from one store on web we all know!), they will likely be cheaper
http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=SP0609

got someone to solder them in and despite the actual button being a little lower than what we replaced, they work great. I wish I did the whole cursor pad at least, the 2 I replaced are so much better. It wasn't overly taxing for my mate to do, and I think I can do the next lot when it comes time to use the remainder.

We followed this video where needed:

Enjoy.

Man I wish I would have come across this post sooner, I have been using a messed up MODE button for at least a year or so. I am planning on ordering some tact switches I saw you had the dimensions 6x6x5 would these work for the MPC 2500?

JVC wrote:OK, I dug up my email archive, and found what I ordered through . Please note that this tact switch is one of the most common tach switch.

This is what you need to order the tact switch on MPC-2000 series:

Tact Switch 6*6mm 5mm Through Hole SPST-NO 50mA

A. It is 6mm by 6mm, and its height is 5mm.
B. SPST-N means Single Pole, Single Throw, Normally Open (most common type)

ALPS and OMRON make tact switches, and they are top brands. The one I got from seller was most likely generic brand, but it was fine, and so cheap. It was $1.00 for 15 switches, I ordered two bags, shipping was $2.50, so $4.50 for 30 tact switches.

MPC Stuff charges those tact switch for $8.00. with 8 bucks, I could've ordered 5 bags (75 switches) from the same seller.

I believe Radio Shack also carries the same switch, and it should be around 1 dollar each.

For the plastic switches, Those are strictly Akai parts, so I guess you have to go through MPC parts dealers.

They look a bit dodgy, like the sort of low quality ones that have failed you in the first place. Look at the photo - if they can't do better than that, then what good their switches?

They might do for light use, if you are pressing a standby button once a day but I'd go for something a bit better like the ALPS-SKHHAKA010, they have a greater than a million depression rating.

You might find this thread interesting.

I think you may get away with that sometimes, but I tried to fix some tacts once like that. It just put a film of grease over the problem, so i ended up with the same problem only greasier. Deoxit D5 is expensive but worth every penny.

If you are going to go to all the trouble to open up your 2500 and mess about with it, best do it right first time and not try to skimp on a pitiful amount of money. After all you've paid quite a bit for the thing in the first place.

Mouser seems to be the site of choice in the US. I'm in the UK and got them from Farnell. At the time there was a minimum order thing so got lots of audio cable with the order too.

But it's good to get a few because other tacts are probably going to fade. I got my 2500 new & one of the Bank tacts was a little ropey after the warranty run out. Then after a few more months about 6 or 7 were a bit intermittent, and when the Mode one became totally unusable I relented.

After replacing about 15 of them it was like having a brand new machine, it felt quick and responsive.

Thanks LZ.... I have had the same problem for a year or so now. I bought my 2500 new and then my mode button started acting weird (working when it wanted to), and now my down arrow doing the same, so now i have to replace them. I have a maschine so i have be using that for a while now, but I have to get back on my 2500 I love the workflow, and now I actually have a interface with 8 inputs. I had a 2 input interface before so the bouncing took forever (thats what had me jump ship to the maschine). But again thanks for all of the help!

Just a little tip regarding the tact switches.

Akai used the same tact switched in their early "S" series sampler (like the s2800, s3000, CD3000, etc.).

What I did is bought a used faulty (didn't boot up) s2800 for really cheap and used it for spare parts (mainly the tact switches for my MPC 2000 classic).

I got the s2800 for $40.
I even sold the screen on eBay for $30, so all in all, it costed me $10 (plus a little gas money lol) to fix my MPC!

Hope it helps :)

Interesting tip. Sounds like a bit much effort to go through the bother of disassembling an S2800 and then de-solder all the tact switches just to reuse on another device. But I guess it's good to recycle. :)

Well, it wasn't much of a problem. If you know your way around it, disassembling the s2800 takes just a few minutes (and I was high a bit LOL).
And yes, recycling is good too :D
Not to mention, now I have a bunch of spare parts (working floppy drive, volume and rec pots, the freaking hard to find Akai RAM, etc.) for future use!
