Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Hi,

I recently came up on a MPC 2000 classic and I'm looking into memory solutions. I'm coming from an Elektron Octatrack with a 16gb flash card so the 1.44mb floppy drive is kind of a bummer. All the mods I've seen on here look pretty intense. I'm leaning towards getting an external scsi/cf card reader but they seem kind of spendy (about as much as I got the mpc for!) Any external scsi to cf card readers you all would recommend? Ones to stay away from? Am I crazy for trying to modernize a 2000 or would the money be better spent towards just buying a 1000/2500?

Anybody have experience with the MPCStorageSolution externals?

Thanks!

my 2 cents. the external is already expensive enough that you aren't saving any money by avoiding internal. if you arent opposed to a little soldering, try this viewtopic.php?f=1&t=175596

From my personal experience, I have purchased all my card readers from mpcstoragesolution.com for my samplers and keyboards with great success. I have had trouble-free operation with the cf card solution. If you want something that quickly connects to the external SCSI port, then their solution is simple and perfect. Just make sure the SCSI port is in good working order. They do have a hot-swap cf card reader that can handle a cf card up to 16gb which the mpc2000 can partition. Do check them out.

You could go the route of attempting to do an internal install of a cf card reader but this is not for everyone. I did one on an mpc2000 and I thought space was tight and it involved custom cabling to get to 25 pin and connect successfully to SCSI interface. I thought this project was very involved but definitely not for everyone to tackle. The easiest route is to simply go external and connect to the SCSI port (just make sure it is working). I vouch for mpcstoragesolution.com. They are definitely a solid lead for a storage solution. Good luck.

@LADiego what happened to your adventure with the sd2scsi?

@richie I have also tried the scsi2sd reader which works nicely with the mpc2000xl but found it was not recognized by the mpc2000. Unfortunately, It just did not see the scsi2sd. Though, it works great with many other samplers.

@LADiego yeah I recall you were working on getting it going for the 2000 in another thread last year. Was hoping you might've got some headway since.

Forget about overpriced CF readers and grab yourself a Magneto Optical drive on ebay for a hell of a lot cheaper. M.O. disks have a long lifespan as well (unlike floppy and zip disks).
