to quantize or not to quantize? Drum tips

hi people i am wondering what people do wiv drums? I make my drums with quantize on and they r way to robotic. However wen i turn it off they way out. I now this has alot to do wiv my poor timing wen taping out the drums but does any 1 have any tips im missing? I have trie swing settings too but it doesnt seem to have much affect.

i usually quantize 1/16 swing:50%, and in some cases i'll do the kick in triplets 1/16(3) for that boom bap styyle. the hi hats i take the quantize off.

me i usually am at 1/16 and 65% swing..hats i definetly dont quantize...make sure u have a solid snare though. i find if you dont, it throws everything else off.

i know what your problem is, it's kind of hard to explain but your probably having the problem where you have a drum pattern to where the little kick that comes before the big kick becomes too mechanical with the regular swing. so what youre going to have to do is play the drum pattern in 1/16 without the little kick, and play the little kick seperately in 1/16(3) triplets. i hope you can understand.

Good drum programming feeds off of different timing resolutions. I use a combo of 16ths & 16th triplets (sometimes it may call for 32's or whatever).

Drop the bass drum on the one using straight 8th/16ths, with double ups using your triplet reso's. Snares go 16th's (which gives that pushing\driving effect) or triplets (if you want that lazy, laidback type of feel).

And hi hat's usually go 16th triplets without the use of the "full level" being turned on, which usually yields a more realistic feel (variants in the nuance).

When all is said and done, and especially in song mode, make sure in the sequence mode that the reso is back at straight 16th's with the swing dialed in at around 70%. Talk about some head nodd'n.

I always quantize my drums, but I work the sh!t out of swing, earliness/lateness, and the different timing signatures. And sometimes I apply different settings at different parts of the pattern. Sometimes if needed, I will have a kick or a snare unquantized if I can't get it right with my above methods, but I never leave an entire pattern unquantized. Gotta freak the functions.

do all my shit on 1/32 cos the esx u cannot turn off quantize but u got to play with the the swing and the tempo to make it sit right.

1/16 then i Q the hihats to 54-53 for Rap 57-64 for house techno or faster beats over100bpm's i dont usually Q the drums ,like that lose feel then again it depends on how you sample them

I never use quantize on any drum machine. If I can't get my drums to sound proper and on beat, then I'll try till it does. But never ever any quantize for me on any drum machine.

i use to think the same way ....but quantize is your friend beleve dat

no quantize except for the first thing i lay down, which i then delete later and redub w/out quantize.

ive gone back and forth depending on the sound im going for. for that jay dee/madlib type of sound, i may not quantize at all. i was into that sound more a few years ago though. when i do that usually there's a sample in there guiding the rhythym first though. now i usually do quantize though and just mess around with earlier and later time shift and swing etc to get it bumpin....maybe i wont quantize high hats or some of the kicks sometimes. i mostly always quantize my snares, but maybe i'll throw unquantized claps over top. swinging each kick different or time shifting each one different helps to...it depends on where they need to be.
