MESA - S3000 woes

Hi

As topic says, struggling to get MESA working with an S3000.

S3000 has OS2.0
PC is Win98SE with Adaptec SCSI card (with right drivers) and updated ASPI drivers.

I have a zip drive (not terminated) between the PC and the sampler, but even if I take the ZIP out of the chain MESA still fails to find the sampler. Nothing shows up in device manager either (assuming I should at least get a yellow question mark).

Help please.

try this :

switch on the S3000.

then boot your computer. the scsi device should be detected if your installation is proper.

Let me be a little more specific. I have MESA up and running in Mac OS9. The problem is MESA on Mac OS 9 locks up the SCSI bus after doing less than half a dozen things. So say I've got a break chopped up into 26 slices, I'm looking at five reboots of the Mac to get it uploaded. I've found it quicker to upload via MIDI on OSX.

So I've aquired an old PC, formatted and reinstalled Win98SE on it, installed all the drivers, checked ASPI, installed Mesa, done the requisite number of reboots between each install plus another 10 for good luck, and still when I turn on the S3000 (even tried booting off a floppy with OS 2.0 on it) then turning on the PC no unknown SCSI device is detected and MESA doesn't find a sampler.

Can I just add I've read the AkaiSCSIfaq many, many times...

I guess I'll have to make do sending samples over midi...

Upgrade the OS on the PC to XP. That'll be half of your battle solve right there.

No...I have it running fine with Win98 as well. That's not the reason.

Which S-Series do you have?

Could it be that MESA PC simply doesn't support the vanilla S3000 (it's not an XL) while the Mac version does, while Mac MESA is flakier than a leper colony on OS9?

I tried it on my XP PC about a week ago and got exactly the same error message and lack of connectivity, aside from the fact of having to install ASPI on the XP box.

do you boot on your scsi device BEFORE your pc ? if not, there will be no scsi dicovery from your windows system.. you have to boot the sampler before the pc. but it seems you've already try this...

then if all the aspi layers are installed, and the lastest mesa. everything should work.

maybe reinstall win98se again, with just the adaptec drivers, and the latest ASPI drivers. (i know you'v already did it, but anyway). make sure that the sampler has an SCSI id different than 1.

you could try millenium also, better software, more stable than any MESA release.

i have installed many times MESA II or Millenium without problems.

Sampler's SCSI id is default (6).
PC picks up 7.
Zip (if used) is set to 5 on the jumper on the back, terminated if PC is off, not terminated if PC is on.

Win 98SE install, aside from the gfx card and sound card drivers which I install before ASPI layer and adaptec drivers, is totally default. I also make sure nothing is running (aside from explorer) when I install MESA.

As far as Millennium, I'm not really into spending $30 on something which isn't guaranteed to work.

Like I said, maybe it's a PC MESA/S3000 don't get along thing.

I tried it with a 3000XL and a 2000. Now that you mention it, the MESA manual states it works for XL series samplers, listing up the 2000, 3000XL, 3200XL and CD3000XL.

I'm sure I've read in one of the forums I've trawled the last week or so that the S3000 gets Mac MESA support but only the (3000 series) XLs get PC MESA support.

There's no mention of MESA in the S3000 OSv2.0 addendum in the manual (printed copy) either.
