Most people use hardware or software to record their beats at some stage, it all comes down to personal preference. Hardware could be a hard disk recorder, analog tape for example. Software would usually be a DAW like logic, cubase, pro tools. Software is widely used to also mix and master tracks beyond the level an MPC is capable of, so it is used for this and recording tracks.

Lots of free software out there which is excellent so no need to spend money on a DAW. Reaper is a popular choice, shareware I believe.
