Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

The following is a description of the MPC's problem, taken from some correspondence I had with Akai Pro.

I have tried removing all Ram, Hard Drive, Adat card, Cd Drive and USB, no change. The unit powers up alternating between Blank screen and temporary boot, then crashes, returning to a similar error message.
I did notice that sometimes when I get a blank startup screen, with the HD is installed, it (HD) does not engage / power up.
The problem seems to be intermittent, although primarily in error. I did manage to get the unit to boot up temporarily and after crashing when trying to load OS Via PC,
I managed to RE - Load / Flash OS using the front USB port. Unit Ran For approximately 30mins, then returned to Error message.

With no other devices / RAM installed the unit temporarily boots, although (no matter which top panel controls I press, pads, scroll, functions etc) I still get the following errors after a couple of minutes:

Boot block exception
UNDEF at 0x430
FSR 0xC0005003
FAR 0x62D499

Fat'l Error "D'ta @bort"
[ID: 00000002, I:00148404\]
[FRR: B0004005, FAR: F83E3846]

Boot block exception
IABORT at 0x301DB410
FSR 0xC0005201
FAR 0x17FFF9EF

+ other Boot block / Fatal Error! variations.

Unfortunately I have been told by Australian repairer that they cannot touch my unit as I bought it second hand from the US?

Akai have given me a copy of the Service Manual, through reading, it has lead me to determine that the error is with the EPROM, on the motherboard.

I cannot find any replacement motherboards (that aren't defective) anywhere? Please Help!

Thanks again for your help, much appreciated!

"We do have the LCD screen in stock for $245, and the jog wheel
encoder (the internal part) in stock for $59.00, but unfortunately the main
board is no longer available."
from Vstservice.com
this is (like we say in italy) a bad story.............

Try powering on the unit without the ram. I had a similar "Fatal error" issue. I would get a frozen screen upon boot up. I had to replace the PCB board with the memory slots. Extremely rare. See if you can get a parts machine with a working board. I also hear the effects board can also be faulty.

Von: thanks, but I am from Europe. Any MPC4000 service specialists from EU?

kevtech: thanks but I already tried all this to no avail and ufortunately a replacement mobo ain't available anymore, can't even be find used :Sigh: Strange thing is that sometimes (after about a bunch of turn off/ons) it finally powers up properly and when it does, it works without a prob but this miracle happens only about once per week or something :?
