Lets say you've been working on a self released EP or LP and its just about done.
What would you do to go about spreading it?
What can you do besides the social media, and mailing it around to different blogs and sites?
Will these sites wanna go into 'business' with you if you have already put it out yourself on bandcamp?

pirate bay, kaboom, and a few of those sites I guess... maybe itunes etc.. the more spots for people to see the album the better, no? And people searching pirate bay for music aren't going to be on itunes trying to buy it anyways so it just equals more exposure.

Asking what I would do, might not work for you, but maybe it will. Takes a lot of work, (not work like a issue like that, just effort). Doing a mini-mix, music videos on the singles prior to a release.

Hanging out at basketball courts where there is no music and playing some stuff. Leaving cassettes with hand drawn covers around and about.

Defiantly preform it all in front of a crowd (street corner and venue -- venue is important)

Getting out and interacting with people in real life is the most important thing. Online people seem to think the playing field was leveled. Not at all. Your competing with peoples attention, especially if your on a social network site? Even worse can be one for music, where you in a pool of a million other people trying to sell you their EP.

It does open you to a lot of places you would otherwise not be able to hit. Being different is important.

So a combination of both works best, really. You can get more attention when your face to face with someone, you can actually interact with them. Puts a face and personality to what you are doing.

The old advice in a lot of ways is still the best... package it up either physically or digitally and then link/post it to labels that are the closest match to your style. Let them do all the legwork with marketing and promotion and aim for a 50/50 deal where you retain full copyright, with a get-out clause that suits you.

Alternatively, get your online presence in place (website/Bandcamp/Soundcloud) and bomb every forum and blog that's out there. 8)
