Basically, do you think that the Studio Black is just a glorified MIDI controller? Or are there features that improve the overall experience that makes the Studio Black worth the buy? Would I be able to accomplish the same goals on a Mini MPK (sample based hip hop) vs. a fully function Studio Black?

the studio is a package that contains the controller (yes, it's just a controller) but it comes with software. The software it comes with (the mpc software) REQUIRES either a studio, a ren, or a touch to use it... it wont open without the controller. Other midi controllers are great too because you can use DAWs made by other companies like ableton, fl studio, logic pro, reason, etc.... Where as the studio is designed for controlling only the mpc software only.

So basically, its just a glorified MIDI that comes with the MPC software?

If that's the case, should I still go with a Studio (black), or should a go for a MIDI keyboard? (or maybe even an MPD) and Is there ANY functionality that is better on an MPC studio than a MIDI?

Is the MPC software particularly good at chopping samples, sequencing, etc. or is just easier to use with Akai?

well it is really a personal opinion thing...

does the software work for chopping and sequencing? yeah... is it as much of a powerhouse as ableton or FL? Not at all... so if you have to choose... maybe try to look at what the software looks like before buying or try it and return it if it isn't for you.
