Been learning Afrobeat. Got my MPC last year partly because I heard it was the best box available for complicated rhythms. Made some beats on it to play along with guitar. Haven't got into advanced uses of MPC yet, still only playing the pads.

Got a book today, African Rhythms from Cameroon by Christian Bourbon. I think the only way I'm ever going to understand the rhythms in the book is if I can program them in my MPC. Wonder if the MPC 2500 with JJOS 128XL can deal with it ? Book doesn't say. If so then I'll give it a try. If not then 3, 4, 6, & 12 beat will be OK since most Afrobeat is in that.

The first few pages are OK, nothing but 6/8 and 12/8. But then it goes off the rails. Beats in 9/8, 15/8, 21/8, 30/8, 27/8.
Counting out 27/8 seems impossible but maybe MPC can help.

Maybe I posted in wrong forum, don't know if tsig function is different in JJOS or is just basic AKAI function. I searched forums and found reference to tsig all the way up to 32/32 but I can't seem to set it other than basic 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/4. I have to do 6/8 and 12/8 beats by setting it to 6/4 and using more bars which is easy enough but don't see how to get to 27/8 that way.

I think I'm might be doing some basic thing wrong. Still learning the basics.

128XL does 9/8 and 15/8 OK but 21/8, 30/8, and 27/8 will need to be entered a different way. I guess you could do 27/8 as 27/32 and speed it up. Or enter it as 3 bars of 9/8 or 9 bars of 3/8 whatever works best.

I'm sure that you can do it one of those ways.. I'd just be interested in hearing good music done at the "simpler" time sigs.. like 15/8
27/8 hurts my head even writing it down.
I may have to grab a copy of that book though.
