i went to check out the 500 at GC again. they had the 1K & 2.5k next to it. the 500 pads felt like the 1Ks. but that's just me though, so if yall really want to know then go check it out for ya self.

p.s. IMO the 2.5K had the best pads and velocity response of the three.

I am not talking about how the feel silly.....

I am talking about whats underneath. The MPC 500 is not individual pads like the 1000 (that break  )....they are more like the classic MPCs. But this is no indorsement that they will not break as well. You get what you pay for. If you want a superior MPC..save you paper route money and/or get your hustle on....

let it be known that jahrome just attempted to justify the price of the mpc500

That's how the original pads are. Youre right, the 1000 pads feel more 'solid' inside and felt weird to me. When you strike a classic pad, there is some give to absorb the impact, but the 1k pad just goes, thud.

I think all MPCs should be sold for over $2000 to help keep them out of the hands of children :P

Is it worth $600?? Is there anything on the market that can compete in that price range? IF the answer is no...than the price is right.....

Then the price is right. The Korg ESX-1 can't compete... The Roland SP-606 can't compete. The only machine that competes is the 1000 and only if bought used.

I can definitely agree with you here..........I am a previous owner of the sp 606 and it most certianly does not compare with the 500.

The sp 606 is 695.00 brand new and the Mpc 500 is 800.00 brand new, for that extra 105.00 you get a much more complete sampler with the 500.IMO :)

The MPC 500 is not really $800. You should be able to get it for $600-$700 without having to haggle with sales reps.

Doesn't haggle mean that you ask them to drop the price? What I'm saying is if I didn't even have to ask them to change the price at all(haggling). Why was the price 799.99? I'm not sure If you live in Cali or not but out here GC doesn't haggle at all...........Unless it's on a used item. This maybe different in your state.

just out of interest, why is the 500 much better than the sp-606? Ive never played with either, but they seem pretty similar. and the 606 has more pads, wav editor and more effects?

The advertised price of the MPC 500 is about $799, the 1000 is $999, and the MPC 2500 is $1999. This is the lowest authorized deals are permitted to advertise. Now there are plenty of dealers that will try to get you to buy at that price....just as a car dealer will do the same. Do not pay the sticker price because you can get it for less.

Now Upright, if you paid over $600, then you should have asked them to drop the price.

The two main reasons IMO that make the mpc better than the sp606 are....

1.The sp606 only has a 8 voice polyphony, the 500 has a 32 voice polyphony.

2.The sp606 has a total of 4 tracks with no midi track sequencing, the 500 has 48 tracks and it will sequence 16 midi tracks.

These are the reasons I recommend the 500 over the sp606.

To be honest I was so excited to get the 500 I never even thought about playing a little hardball with the salesmen. If you get it for the cheaper price(and I'm sure you will) then congrats to you.Although if you get the lower price I have to admit I will feel like I was a little impulsive  and I will most definitely remember your advice in the future.Good lookin' out J. :)

I do think it's worth every penny I paid though...this thing is nice!!1

I gotta admit, its a very apealling machine!

I would get one, but i think it would be smarter to get something like the 1k for the same price. Especially considering that ive already got the sp404.
