The USB port on the MPC500 is only for connecting to a host PC/Mac for data transfer purposes to the CF card, if one is inserted in the MPC500. When plugged into Windows, it shows the CF card as a USB Mass storage device. The MPC500 cannot host external drives itself.

So, in answer to your question, no you cannot hook up an external USB drive to the MPC500.

Hope that helps. :)

I bought a 2gb flash card. Apparently that's as big as you can get due to the file system. But seriously, I doubt you'll need any more. I have been using just one bank so far which is growing all the time. Nowhere near the 128mb memory limit. All sounds are within that bank, as are the sequences. 24 programs, up to 48 samples per program.. That's 1152 samples all up available at any one time! If you've got loads of drums samples, hits etc, 128mb is plenty of space. 99 sequences can be stored. If you create all you tracks(songs) within a sequence by copying tracks and all instead of chaining sequences together in song mode, then that's 99 songs you can have in memory at any time too.. Which could be 8 album's worth of material! So that's one 128mb bank of sounds for 8 albums say.. A 2gb card will hold another 14 or so similar sized banks.. Possibly another 100 albums worth of tracks? When you think about it, it's plenty of space. It's all about how you use it.

Some are I guess, but mine was $69 at this place I remember visiting in Lower Manhattan called J&R. It's a faster speed one. The extra speed doesn't really make any difference though (only really for cameras), so I should have really just gone for the cheaper one which was $49. Sandisk I think..
