Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500

Hi,

I tried to emulate a hipass filter on my MPC500 and it works... nearly. It goes like this:
  1. take a sample (e.g. a drumloop)
  2. invert the sample (multiply amplitude by -1) and save to new sample
  3. load both samples into the MPC and assign each one to an other pad
  4. make a sequence and trigger both samples/pads simultaneously
  5. apply a filter to one sample, play sequence and modulate the filter with the slider

As I said, it mostly works with the MPC500, but every 2nd or 3rd trigger there's a slight delay between both samples resulting in some kind of "flanging" sound. Does this also happen on other MPC models or is it a MPC500 timing problem?

I uploaded two testloops to my webspace, if you'd like to check:
(Original) http://www.distanzmusik.de/motone/testloop.wav
(Inverted) http://www.distanzmusik.de/motone/testloopinv.wav

Kind regards,

m0t0n3.

Seems like a lot of trouble to go through to emulate a high pass filter. Why not just the master effects eq as a highpass filter and resample through that?

Because I want to tweak it in realtime...

How do you multiply the amplitude with -1? Whih program do you use?!?

I just want to say that your hi-pass filter emulation seems real nice!! BIg UP's!!

This hipass emulation sounds like the answer to a big drawback of the mpc500.

Can I Multiply Amplitude by -1 on the mpc500? If so, how?

cheers

That's right, the MPC500 can only play 3 or 2 samples simultaneously in perfect sync. I tested this with a short click sound by playing 16 notes of the click simulataneously. When I viewed the waveform, I could see 5 clicks one after the other. Meaning a few were in sync. The MPC4000 is a lot worse though, when I did the same thing on it, I could see all 16 clicks one after the other.

I think (originaly) MPC's were actualy ment to trigger (short) drum samples and sequence onther hardware instead of triggering multi-bar samples and creating whole songs on a single MPC, especialy on the cheepest MPC500 of the whole MPC range.

I notice some weird behaviour from time to time, in a way it gives the MPC a bit of character. Before buying one I read about all kinds of weirdness on both MPC1000 and MPC500. I accept the the MPC500 lacks some features and try to be creative with the ones it has. In the end it's a nice little box, with a mind of its own.

I haven't tried 'emulating' a highpass filter on the MPC500, I kinda doubt it can be done properly with out a real 'highpass filter'. I suspect you would get some kind of phasing/cancelation effect by mixing a normal and inverted version of the same sample together.
