update:

Things I've tried:

- repair disk permissions
- cleared MIDi .plst files
- removed device from MIDI studio
- uninstalled driver + restart
- reinstalled driver + restart
- uninstalled MPC software + restart
- reinstalled MPC software

Plugged the MPC back in and instant kernel panic

:WTF:

Also tried contacting Akai directly about it, but I haven't heard back from them yet (and yes I realize they have a 72 hour wait).

I made a post about it here as well:

I tried it on a different computer yesterday. Had a hard time installing the drivers (this was on a Windows 7 laptop btw). It wasn't reading the MPC, which leads me even closer to a problem with the USB port. The firmware took a little while too. After I finally got all that out of the way, I was led to the preferences menu. It wouldn't allow me to use the MPC as an audio device. Gave me an error message.

Akai also got back to me, and they told me my MPC was out of the warranty date, and then prompted me to some servicing places. I'm bummed, but there's really nothing else to do other than send it out and shell out money. :-D :Sigh:

I've installed the MPC software lately on Windows 7 and had issues too. The way it got fixed is by uninstalling The new MPC software and then installing the oldest version possible(you'll find them on the AKai site). Then you can hook up the MPC, register. When that works you can upgrade to the new versions. Like I said before, PLUG YOUR MPC IN A USB 2.0 PORT (not a 3.0), most new laptops have a USB 3.0 port but for some reason the one that works best is a SB 2.0 port. Good Luck, I'm sure there's nothing wrong with your MPC.

In the EU consumers have legal rights to expect a product to last many years (up to 6 years, depends on what it is), regardless of any additional warranties offered by the manufacturer - is there not something vaguely similar in the US? Are you really on your own after 12 months has passed?

Hey Tutor,

You guys in the UK and EU have better consumer protection practices than here in North America. Once the warranty is up here, you're essentially shafted. Companies put clauses in place in their TOS to deny the right to go after them if the product is defective. Most of our warranties are "Limited, 1 year on parts and labour, or for any manufacturing defects". Software seems to be a grey area.

Bringing back this old thread.

Shortly after this started happening, I put my MPC away in storage for a few months. I didn't have the money to get it repaired, and even if I did, I still wasn't sure where to send it off to. Anyway, back in November, I got it out of storage to test it and see if it would work again. Lo and behold, it worked like the issue never existed. It disappeared. So I started using it again with minor audio interface related issues. Possibly related.

So here I am now, and my MPC is doing this AGAIN. :WTF:

Does anyone have any idea of what's going on here? I suspected last time that it was a USB issue, and I'm 99% sure that's the problem. But if it was a hardware issue, why would the problem disappear after a few months of sitting in storage? :hmmm:

I'm sick of the obstacles, I just want to make music.

Here's the crash report:

Update:

I decided to open it up and take a look, and I randomly thought to clean the contacts with rubbing alcohol. I just plugged it in and turned it on, and it seems to be working again.

Crossing my fingers that this was the problem... Can dirty contacts cause these kinds of issues, or am I being naive?
