the carbon decal isn't also a carbon

It is ink, with a wood pattern, not wood.

It is painting the surface, not laying a veneer of wood over the top of it.

but jakob claims his finish is wood. so why would this other method even matter?

yeah it's sign of it being graphic made of plastic wrapped / here actually painted over a case from 2D pattern picture, as real wood looks different in cross section. Still nicely done.
