It's not always the drive. In my case it was capacitors on the main circuit board. Luckily I bought it from Music Go Round, and they covered the cost of the repair.
I had the exact same problem as the guy in that post ("Oops, bad data from disc" message after my S950 had been on a while), but it wasn't the capacitors that needed changing. It was a dry joint where the floppy power adaptor attaches onto the power board. Easy fix. Glad I didn't have to replace the caps.
