Quantize off, pad hits sound quantized...

So Im layering some kicks in a drum sequence w/quantize off (xl). When I play the kicks out on the pads, it sounds exactly how I want it to, but on playback, the kicks dont hit at the same time as when I recorded. Does this have something to do with the midi ppq when the sampler section communicates with the sequencer? I could go into step edit and change it, but it would be nice to get it right when rec'ing to eliminate the need to do additional editing.

Sorry for the noob question, I should know this ish...I have the manual here, no info though...
