The most natural sounding way is to have the same sound on two pads, side to side, maybe tweak them so that they sound just a little bit different from eachother. Then play the drum roll yourself with the full level turned off, and without timing correct.

Or then you can just hold NOTE REPEAT and press the pad, again with full level turned off. Highlight the timing and roll the jog wheel to change the speed of the roll.

If you are playing it on the pads you might want to try slowing the tempo a bit when you record.

the way i currently make drum rolls is with step edit with the quantise on 36ths, make sure you change the velocity accordingly

What do you mean by quantize on the 36ths... Can you give an example of a drum roll you created in step edit... Like could you give me where you placed the drum rolls... For Example:

1st drum hit 001.01.36

And so on...

easiest way to make drum rolls is on step mode.... put hits every 7to11 ticks and make sure the velocities and some tunings are different, maybe even some attack difference aswell....
