MPC 2K Classic Boot from zip

Howdy folks,

ive just purchased an mpc2000 classic for cheap...

It didnt come with the boot OS on floppy, but on an old external ancient syquest drive, with a 105mb disk and the OS on that. That boots up fine,

I managed to score some free scsi zip drives from my office job (iomega 100plus drives), and have an ide internal zip for my pc to transfer between mpc and PC.

first question is, ive got the 1.72 OS from akai, and formatted a zip (fat), dumped it on, and attempted to load it up via external iomega 100plus scsi (id5). I can see the mpc cycle through the scsi as it loads, but still asks for boot disk. I know the OS 1.72 is on that zip disk. Does it need to be formatted specially for mpc2000? (both my pc internal and external zip drives are iomega 100s)

Could I load the mpc up from my original syquest external, and format a floppy in the mpc floppy drive and dump the OS onto the floppy from that external scsi device? (i read that i couldnt do that, but i just want to clarify)

I've trawled the forum trying to get specific answers to these questions. so please direct me to previous posts or threads if i missed it.

ok I did more deep sea fishing, and i read that yes zip disks DO need to be formatted by the MPC 2k in order for them to work...

So i take it, if i dont have the floppy disk with OS, the only way to boot the MPC is fat formatting a floppy via PC and putting on OS (zipping straight to the disk). ZIPs with the same procedure wont work?

and that also can you transfer the OS from scsi externals (zip or otherwise) to a floppy in the MPC drive?

I got OS 1.72 via a FAT formatted floppy, with the .zip OS 1.72 file extracted straight onto it, switched the MPC on, and thank jebus the floppy still works.

Im going to try the same with the ZIP (last time i did a windows copy and paste which might effect it, this time ill do a straight extract to ZIP)

way to answer your own questions brah...

Just use the Copy Operating System feature of the MPC (it's last in the Save menu) to creat bootable zip disks. It's way easier than all the stuff you are doing.

My issue was i didnt have floppy access, and the OS was on an old Syquest drive disk, and was seeing whether I could FAT format a zip via PC, dump the OS on, and boot it up from there. it didnt work, and because you cant transfer OS from external scsi (only from floppy)

It worked however with a floppy, which i did elsewhere borrowing someones drive.

It seems interesting that you cant format a ZIP in a PC and dump the OS on, but you can with a floppy.

In anycase, i got it booted, and are making duplicate OS zips faster than a fast metaphor...
