This "trick" is a nice idea but it doesn't work good enough. I experiment with that a time ago and none of the samples was "chopped" tight enough. No wonder, to use all the 128 steps (Value 0-127) you're sample has to be exactly 5 seconds if I remember correctly. If it is longer you wont be able to trigger the last part (8th or 4th) of the sample.
A shorter sample will not result in a higher "trigger resolution". Instead of that the samplestart will be played at lower values. So if 127 will play the samplestart at a 5 second sample the samplestart at a 4 Second sample will be represeted by the value 80 or so.
Result = No greater resolution
It would be cool if a shorter sampletime would be spread to all the values 0-127. This would result in a higher resolution and the sample could be triggered much tighter. (another point to the one who maybe program a custom OS for the 2000 one day

Oh I chop with the zones. I enlage the zone to a bit more than a 8th note, set the length to FIX, set the startpoint of the zone, copy to new, set the next startpoint, copy to new etc. Then I go thru the samples and set the correct end point.
Dont know why some people consider his as a problem.
