note variation slider (whatever its call)

How do use the note variation slider?, In the manual it states to how shift and click the note variation slider and then when you hit record and play start and choose what sound you want to use the note should change the pitch of the tune...mines not doing so is it something im doing wrong?

shift + the button above the slider brings up the screen where you choose the sound and what filter or effect you want (using the pads and jog wheel) Once you go back to main screen the sound on that pad is effected by moving the slider.
