I've been a long time lurker of this forum but have never really posted much as I never had an MPC. Always wanted one, could never afford it. I've been watching every single one that went up on eBay (not so much thinking I could afford one just gear porn pretty much). Finally saw an MPC 2000 xl at $300 with a minute left and I actually had the money for once, snagged it, couldn't be happier.
I've now had it for two days and I love it so far but I bought it on eBay from one of those pawn shop "we sell everything" types so I know they didn't use it. The day I got it I messed with it for hours trying to figure it out (didn't come with a manual, got one today) and then yesterday I hung out with my girlfriend so I didn't get around to using it. Today my friend who also makes beats (we both normally use Ableton or FL Studio) came over and we were trying to figure out the MPC. We chopped up a sample from vinyl, laid it out on the pads, started figuring out how to record patterns and then POOF the Data Wheel stopped working.
LONG STORY SHORT (for those who didn't want to read the whole thing) is this a common problem, is it easy to replace (I noticed the rotary encoder is only $15 on mpcstuff.com) and has anyone else had this happen to them? I was planning on upgrading the floppy to a card reader and expanding the memory anyway so I had planned to get my hands a little dirty but is this task above me? My dad could possibly help out too, he's a mechanical engineer and he solders much better than I do.
