the fresh lab question-thread (2000xl)

hi there!

since i'm new to the 2kxl game (but rocked the 500 for some years now) i have some questions, some of them are specific to the 2kxl, some are not...

i want the questions all in one thread, so i don't have to open up a new one for every question...

so i'ma start right on:


when i have a long sample asigned to one pad and i hit said pad, is there way to stop the sample from beeing all played to the end? because if i only want to know which sound is stored on the pad, i just hit it, hear the sound(sample) and want it to stop being played.
with the 500 i just had to press the STOP button, with the 2kxl this trick doesn't work.

is there something like mute groups built in the 2kxl? so when i trigger one sample via PAD1, it gets stopped by hitting PAD2, which should be in the same mute group. the first sound gets stopped as the second sound interrupts and gets played...
i hope you know what i mean...

can i connect an external CD drive to the mpc and load samples directly from a cd (with .wav files on it)?


i hope someone of you can answer this questions, since the manual couldn't help me out on this one.

edit: found the mute group question out on my own, others still remaining!

Either u switch all the sample to mono or switch to one shot as i do in my MPC 5000 dont know if the xl has it.

Yes you can as long as you can find a SCSI CD drive (those are tad hard to find tho).

Yes on the US ebay, not so in Europe. Which is where our chap is from. Even if you can pick up one from Ebay, often times the shipping handling and custom fees will make it a very expensive option. The better option is to find one second hand locally. This ofcourse leads back to the fact that there is not a very large second hand market for external SCSI drives in Europe

Ofcourse one can use your excellent services but again, shipping and custom fees will propably atleast double the price of the unit.

your cheapest drive is $79 + $60 shipping to Austria = $139 + $35 for taxes (not knowing the exact taxes that Austria has, but that should be about right) = $174 add to that the standart customs fee aswell. (yes we have to pay taxes for the shipping aswell)

So we are looking at a SCSI drive for about $180.

Now I bought a external SCSI tower + 2 x 9GB harddrives for it and all the cables, locally for about $40. I couldn't imagine a SCSI CD-ROM costing more, if he can find one that is. If money is not an issue then all this doesn't really matter.

Sabotage is right. To order from the States is very expensive for me, even though the product itself might be cheap.
You listed the details.

I thougt of going this way: i'ma go with floppies for the moment and watch out for external CD-drives with scsi when hitting up the fleamarket or random internet-spots when beeing on the look-out for records.
