Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By JVC Wed Feb 10, 2010 10:55 pm
Hello,

I found out that left channel (and left channel on "Phones" too) on my MPC-2000 does not work. (I got it on ebay.) Is this common problem? Does anyone know how to fix? (I know how to solder)
(I should have tested sooner... I cannot give a seller negative feedback anymore!)

Thank you in advance.

thats a pretty easy fix as long as you know how to solder..you'll just need the jacks and then take it apart and unsolder the old ones and re-solder the new ones..

Is it really just issue with bad jack? I don't think signal for left channel is not coming in (before signal reaching to the jacks), since BOTH left channel (mono plug) and the left channel on stereo out (where you can insert a headphone jack) are shot.

Thank you for your advice though.

(Sigh) I guess I'll get a new pot from MPC stuff.com. Does any one know part number of the pot? I am sure Jameco sell the compatible pot.

Doesn't sound like a potentiometer problem at all to me... I'd do more investigation before buying parts that you may not need at all.

Since you know how to solder, do you have an oscilloscope handy or available to you?

The schematics for the 2000 are out there so using a scope, you could trace the audio path from the jack back through the machine to see where the signal is getting lost. The fix may be as easy as reflowing a cold solder joint -- however if the issue is stemming from the IC, it may be more difficult to fix without a donor MPC or replacement part...

you dont troubleshoot electronics backwards, you start at the source or most obvious problem, follow the signal path, and work forward. The audio signal does not flow from the audio jack to the machine, it goes from the machine to the jack.

left channel (and left channel on "Phones" too)

Since as he said in the post, the problem is in the head phone jack and the left jack, the most obvious problem is the pot, and instead of using an o-scope, he can get a multi meter from radio shack for 10 bucks and check the continuity from the pot to the jack. Check the solder joints on the pot, more than likely...........you need a new pot. Its also alot easier to come about a new pot.

I opened and checked whether there was anything wrong physically (i.e. line being cut off.) I thought those pots were to control input / output of line signal digitally (indirectly), like variable fader on MPCs.
The pot (recording level and volume use the same parts) has two channels (each pot has 6 soldering points), so I guess the actual sound signal go through the tiny pots! I think I have to order the pot from MPC stuff; I don't think I can find the same one anywhere else.
By the way, I don't have oscilloscope! I do have multimeter though.

By the way, is this common problem?

its somewhat common, remember these machines were made in the mid 90's so the parts in there are almost 15 years old and just like any other electronic componet parts burn out. Im assuming you know how to use a multimeter and shoot a wire, so go ahead and do that, but like i said youre most likely going to need a new pot, i hope you got mad soldering skills too cus a sloppy job will do more harm than good and getting wires mixed up will really screw your machine up, if you're not confident enough i suggest sending you machine to vstservice.com, btw you can also get parts there too sometimes cheaper than mpcstuff.

good luck.

Thank you for the info. I checked VST website, but they didn't have the pot parts I need. They should have a better shipping cart system. It is kind of hard find the items I want... But, VST's parts seem to be cheaper than MPC stuff.

Other question:
Can the Volume pot PCB Board be detached from the ADDA PCB Board? Are those wires directly soldered to each other?

Oh man. It was just soldering points on the pod was being loose. I re-soldered the board and now it is fixed. The way MPC2000 classic is designed, I think many of them suffer the same issue.

Mine did the same thing. It was fine when i first got it then. last night, the left output just stopped putting out... With the "Phones" port also. I found that when i put the jack in just till that first notch click, i could hear out of both earbuds and both outputs... I also noticed that if I messed with my loose volume switch, the sound would go in and out...

SOOOOO... I have come to the conclusion that the ???"Pot"??? needs to be replaced or resoldered...

to get to the outs you gotta take out all that boards, right?
some MPCs you can flip over but I don't think you can with this one
