2000 XL Which SCSI-ZIP Drive?

might come off noobish but it's a pain to me so please put me in the right direction somehow... cardreader is no alternative at this point...

i got this zip drive

..and just read that it wont work with a 2kxl...


so what type of zip drives are working with the 2kxl and which cable is required?

i can only find 250mb drives drives without termination and all that adresses...

Wax Inspektor asks a question about a zip drive and then there is a reply by Wax Inspector posting the scsiforsamplers link. the problem here is that scsiforsamplers forgot to log off as Wax Inpecktor and sign in as scsiforsamplers.com and respond to the original question. Tacky!

believe me he is not the only game in town for selling the same equipment he sells. he probably gets his stuff on ebay too just like everybody else and then passes it off as better. he is no better than those folks on ebay. and he knocks those people that sell on ebay. peace.

i just found the scsi-for-sampler page and kinda answered my own question... im not even from the states...

are those iomega 250mb zip drives the only ones that i could use? im not willed to pay 70$+import for such old ish...
i kinda leave the cf reader out of the game cause i need a hot-swappable device to transfer files... is there an alternative?

JD from scsi for samplers is a well respected member here.
He may bend the rules a little as far as self publicity goes but he helps a lot of people out .
Slagging him off will not win you many friends here.

Wax Inspektor, look for a zip drive that has the little SCSI "S" symbol over the right connector. See how the one you posted has a printer over it? That indicates that it is a parallel zip drive. Also, all SCSI zip drives will have one or two little switches between the two connectors, for setting termination and selecting the SCSI ID number. If there is not at least one switch, then the drive will not be compatible with a sampler.

That thread you took the picture from explains pretty clearly which drives work and which don't.

The cable you need is a 50 pin half pitch(SCSI 2) to 25 pin D sub

To add to it: You could also install an internal Ide drive. There are often quite a few of these on ebay still.
You will need a 40 pin ribbon cable and also a Molex power connecter to modify the original floppy connector.

that one was on point... sorry for blaming your site, it's just that i couldn't afford your zip+import...

...so thanx guys... seems now I know what I need to look for... kinda hard to find those on the german net... gotta check the old electronic-nerd-stores i guess...

Yes, the Zip Plus should work with your XL. I just hooked one up to my XL running os 1.2 and I used a DB25 to HD50 SCSI cable with a DB25 gender changer (required because of that male connector on the left side). You must always hook the SCSI cable coming from your XL to the left connector (the one that says "Auto Detect"). The female connector on the right is for daisy-chaining to another SCSI drive. The Zip Plus has auto-termination and if you hook another drive to the right connector, it will autonatically turn off the termination; if no drive is attached, then termination is on. Just make sure that you set the SCSI ID switch on the back of the Zip Plus to 5.

I saw somewhere online and printed out a list of brands/drives known to be compatable to the 2000XL. I will try to find it again and post it.

I have a related question too though, can the parallel zip drives be used at all with SCSI music instruments? I have a parallel drive and know it doesn't work with MPC, but could I use it with other pieces of gear like my Ensoniq EPS or Akai S2000? I've always assumed that it wouldn't because there is no termination or possibly no SCSI ID# (not really sure exactly what makes a parallel drive so different).

parallel is not the same format as scsi. It's like asking if you can plug your firewire device into your USB port.

Big up scsi for samplers I got my 16 gb cf card reader works like a charm you just have to make sub folders to use up all the space.

You can have the cf card reader and the scsi working simultaneously you can load off of any one and then transfer files if you want you just can't change cf cards. You just load up 0 or 5 and then save
