I need help with my new set-up...

Basically I use to have an m-audio delta 1010 card and I would have my outs going from my computer into my mpc, so I could sample from cd's. Now I switched my set-up and got an mbox 2 and protools. I just started figuring out how to use the mbox, but I want to be able to do the same thing as before. Is there a way I could just trigger sounds from my computer and record them onto my mpc? because I usually like playing samples and then just recording whatver part I like direclty into the mpc. I have a zip drive on my mpc and computer and I could always copy the sample on the zip, but I rather have my beat playing and play a whole cd and look for samples. How could I do this now? I was thinking about getting a regular cd player and hook up the stereo outs from the cd player into the mpc any suggestions?

you cant with the 2000/2000xl... you can only go to the sample screen and record a sample... and now while the mpc is playing.

Yea I know I can't record the sample while the beat is playing, but I just want to play the beat and at least hear the samples over the drums I have. Then I could always stop the beat and record the sample when I know it's the right one... this is what I'm trying to do...

ahh, i see what you mean.... yeah you cant with the 2000/2000xl.

you can do it with the 60, and with later models... not with those though.

you could get around that with a mixer setup though... run two outputs from your interface to the mixer going to your monitors, and the mpc main outs to that mixer too... then take another 2 outputs from your sound card to the mpc and when you hear something you wish to sample... you switch the outputs over to the ones connected to the mpc.

for example,
sound interface: outputs 1 and 2 going to mixer
outputs 3 and 4 going to mpc
mpc : main outputs going to mixer

mixer : main outputs going to studio monitors (speakers)


now, in lets say fl studio if you use that... you go into the audio settings and keep it on outputs 1 and 2 for browsing and listening to potential samples... when you find the one you want to record into the mpc, you change the output to 3 and 4 in the options and make the cut.

do you have a mixer? or just protools?

ive used the mbox and i later bought the delta 1010 and prefer that to any m box. why dont you use the delta 1010 with protools?

I don't have a mixer... just the mbox and protools.. I wanted to get the mbox, because that's what most of th e people I work with use and I wanted to record vocals direclty through the mbox hoping it would sound better, becasue with the delta I had to hook my mic to an amp and then the amp went into the delta and I know I must be loosing some sound quality doing that. I'm thinking about just putting the delta back on my computer also and just using it, so I could get sounds from the delta into the pc. But I know i'm also loosing quality going out with the 1/4 cables, so I was wondering if I could send sound out the card via Coaxial S/PDIF Output: into the mpc will this sound better? I'm not sure if the mpc2k xl has this input?

The mpc has coax spdif inputs only if you have the 8-outs board installed.

You're being a little too finnicky about quality though... I don't think you are going to lose much if you have to patch something via a cable. Are you using a $10,000 mic? Also, using an external preamp is almost always going to be better quality than a soundcard built in preamp. I don't think you should be so worried about it.

Can't you via itunes or whatever, play your cd, and then also just have protools runnign with the MPC ins on monitor?
