Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By Twoeleven211 Mon Mar 23, 2009 4:06 am
I have an MPC 200xl with 1.1 installed.

I want to update it to 1.20 because I want to install a cf reader.

I downloaded the firmware from AKAI's website, unzipped and loaded onto a floppy from my pc.

When I try to load the new firmware (.BIN) to my MPC it's telling me the file type is not recognized.

I unzipped the firmware before I put it on the floppy.

What am I missing?

Any ideas? Thank you for looking.

That's because you need the MPC 200XL OS which is hard to find.

Damn Juke

Does the 200XL have 12 pads instead of 16?

On a serious note,

Well did you format the floppy on your PC or MPC.

Just install the card reader first than put the new O.S. on a CF Card.

Put the CF card into the card reader, turn it on and load from the load screen.

From my understanding you dont need O.S 1.20 installed first in order to use the card reader.

Edit:

Install OS 1.14 using a floppy, load into XL.

Install card reader than w/ a CF card w/ OS 1.20 Load OS 1.20 into XL

Done!

Thanks but the main problem is I want to update the OS before I even get the reader and I can't even do that.

I formatted a floppy in my pc,
downloaded the newest OS from Akai in .BIN format,
unzipped and put it on the floppy,
tried to load it in my mpc,
the mpc says file type not recognized.

? What am I missing ?

DO NOT FORMAT A FLOPPY USING A PC
FORMAT IT IN THE XL
Same thing for a CF Card

If you format it using a pc then the XL wont recognize it.

If you format it using the XL, a PC will still recognize it.

Follow the instructions first.

If you watched the video, OS 1.14 will recognize the CF Reader and then you can update it to OS 1.20

Why is it that you badly want to update the OS first.

It seems like you just to a look a my post w/o reading it.

i think he may be under the impression that the CF card wont work under 1.14 (which it will of course)

I just like having all my firmwares on electronics up to date. I see what your saying and will put the cf reader in first.

I did try formatting in my mpc first as well. But my pc told me I would have to format it in order to be able to use it.
I'm running vista, is that why?

are the disks new?

I purchased new disks from Office Depot which were already pre formatted. I didn't format in my pc or the mpc.

All I had to do was drag the BIN file ONLY to the disk, do not include the read me files in the disk or it wont work, at least it didn't for me.

Once i dragged the file to the floppy I inserted it into the MPC and it loaded right up.

It would be really convienient if MPCstuff included an OS on a floppy in the mcd kit.

Hi folks,

since I had the same issues with my card reader, I found this thread when searching in the internet.

My MPC 2000XL had version 1.14. I installed an IDE card reader (*), but the MPC did not recognize it.

Therefore I reinstalled my floppy drive, let the MPC format a floppy disk, copied the version 1.2 BIN to it, put the disc into the MPC and finally loaded the firmware.

Afterall, I replaced the floppy drive with the IDE card reader and voilà, the MPC recognizes it as an ATAPI HD. Btw, I don't even have to restart the MPC when removing the CF card, as some other pages claim.

(*) Type is: Delock IDE 3½“ Card Reader für Compact Flash Typ I/II und IBM Micro Drive

Conclusion: Depending on the card reader, one has to have firmware 1.20 to make it work.
