epic noob Q: maybe timing problem when recording?

hey guys, got my MPC a while back but only just had some time to start playing with it now. so after I assign some sounds to the pads ready to make a drum beat I hold the record button down and start trying to record something. finished, let go of the record button and hit play and it doesn't follow the timing that I hit that pads at all. I noticed that the time counter doesn't go up unless you push a pad which I think seems strange. But can someone please help me out.

you have to press start and record to start recording to a sequence, it should count you in, then record the sequence you want to make. if i'm reading this question right? also if you actually ARE recording and it's not following the way you input it, quantize is probably on. it will rigidly force the pad hits into a time signature. you need to disable it, you should be able to find it and turn it down to 'off.'
