There are lots of sample CDs available these days where they have sliced the beats and that allows you to use the original beat at any tempo and it sounds pretty much just the same. No time-stretching, which almost always affects the sound of the original phrase. This may be old hat to all of you guys - if so, pardon my ignorance - I'll admit I am not well-schooled in beat manipulation tricks of the trade.
So what they do is split the beat into a series of 12 pieces and each piece is assigned the next note in the scale. So in a midi sequence, by putting the 12 notes that make up the beat in a row, you can set the sequence to play back at any tempo and the beat sounds just right (mostly).
