MPC 2000xl Smell

Hey guys,

I am new to the forum so I just wanted to say hi. I recently purchased a 2000 xl off craigslist for a pretty reasonable price. I am pretty happy with the thing but apparently the person who owned it before me smoked a lot. The MPC smells like a dirty ashtray. Although this may seem trivial it is making stinking up my room. I have rubbed it down with vinegar to try and neutralize the smell, and it worked okay, but it stills stinks (especially the pads). Anyone have a similar experience?

Yep...take it all apart and give it a good cleaning. This includes removing the pads...if you haven't done this, you wouldn't believe the soot/resin that will be in between them.

Yup I did that. Stuff was nasty. I think the pads are the root of it actually. I'll get new ones. Would anyone recommend the super thick cork ones on mpc stuff?

all of em look thick from mpc stuff. I'm still thinking about getting some when/if i paint my xl.

Just replace your pads, you are not going to be able to eliminate the odor that easy...

Dude Ive got a studiomaster 16 8 16 mixer that smells too.
Id get rid but it sounds soo sweet.

on that board you should be able to remove the knob caps and take the whole top panel off... so then you clean that down and while your at it you can sprits some contact cleaner in the scratchy pots and faders etc...

the **** will be the 300 pot caps you will have to remove.

Allready been fully stripped and cleaned but when see's warm see smells like working mens club.

hahaha, that's an old mixer right there... that thing was made back when nobody knew smoking was bad!

I do like studiomaster boards too.... for a cheap costing board they sound very warm. I have one I liked for drums.

And they are for nothing in the UK. Mine was £30.

I know!! haha... here in canada they are not extremely uncommon either. I own 2 of their mixers. while they are not always the best for recording they are reliable.

To be fair, cheap mixers or fantastic landscapes.

Canada wins ever time.

well the UK has some good music gear made there studiomaster included... all we got is trainor, bryston and soundcraft
