Storing samples on floppies

whats up guys im thinking about getting a mpc 2000XL and i was wondering about the storage..

so on a cf would i store all the drum sounds on it then save beats that i made on it and when the card gets full get another one and load drum samples on to it and keep repeating?

also, for some reason i feel like if i could store my drum sounds on a hard drive, then whenever i make a beat save the sample i used and the drums sounds onto one floppy it would be organized, so i would have every beat on its own floppy so instead of looking through multiple beats on different cf cards i could just find the floppy and load it up....

idk of this makes sense but if i could get some help it would be appreciated

However the way I liked working was:

I didn't load up piles of samples on the CF card (at first I tried that and disliked it for my workflow)


so what I did was turn the mpc on, sample in all the material from records or the computer or various sources (not load them from the card, but actually sample them in) and then I built the song...
when it came to the saving part, I right away made a new folder with the song title as the name, then I saved the programs and sounds as well as the sequences and songs in that new folder... now all components of the track are kept in that folder for easy loading and future reference.

yeah that makes sense but what if on that particular song im not sampling the drums off a record would I go through my computer then load certain files? i got the floppy idea from damu the fudgemonk, it just looked organized

Damu is using an mpc classic that is not upgraded so basically it's stock with the floppy and 2 megs of ram. He is not using an XL with the cf card. Also, the 2000 classic can not see folders within cards or hard drives etc... so it requires different techniques for mass storage devices.

I have a 2000 classic and I do basically the exact same thing as I mentioned above except instead of it being a folder on a card, it's a floppy disk. I put in a new floppy disk, format it, and save all programs and sounds as well as all sequences and songs onto the floppy. CF cards are more reliable then floppy disks.

Now, one thing you could do is put a folder on the cf card with a bunch of sounds from the computer in there... but I highly suggest when saving, make a new folder for the song and save every component of the song in there. Later on you could even make a folder on your PC and you could drag your song folders into there to back them up.

Yepp. Thats a good way. You can create one folder for all drums, one for bass sounds, one for uncutted loops and such. These will be your source folders. But when found samples that fit together (in other words: made a beat or a song), create a new folder and save this program (collection of samples) and the sequence data to this folder.

You can also create subfolders. I would use it to devide the source folders mentioned above from the song folders.

  bassamples
  loops
  etc
• songs
  Fat track 01
  dope tune 02
  lettn ya know
  whip dat ass
  etc

But thats just the way how I would do it. Maybe helpful for you, maybe not. Depends on how you work.

right so on the card you may have folders set up something like this:

right in the root of the card:

(in the "samples" folder)
samples/snares
samples/kicks
samples/CHHs
samples/OHHs
samples/rides
samples/MISC

(in the "projects" folder)

projects/song001
(in there you will have:)
projects/song001/song001.seq
projects/song001/song001/pgm
projects/song001/snare808
projects/song001/BD808
projects/song001/CHH808

(then:)
projects/song002/
projects/song003/

etc...

get it? so each song has it's own folder that you make when it's time to save it... and all things the mpc used for the song are stored in the proper folder for later easy loading and backing up. I used to not do it that way, and then I stood back to figure out the best way that worked for me.
