Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By nerdartistic Wed Dec 08, 2010 11:46 pm
Hey everybody, i'm new to the forum, new to the mpc game, and just generally new so bear with me. I've been googling my ass off but i can't find a straight solution to my problem

i recently bought my MPC 2000XL from a guy on craigslist in really good condition; no problems whatsoever. However, it was the base model, meaning no memory sticks and a floppy drive. So, I bought the sticks and a mcd drive upgrade on ebay and installed everything like i was supposed to, updated the os, ready to make finally make some beats.

then disaster strikes. i cut the mpc on and it flashes this message:

Insert MPC2000XL Disk!

i figure i didnt update the software correctly (i had to install 1.14 then 1.20) even tho i did as the instructions said, so i reconnect the floppy drive and try to boot up the OS disk that came with the mcd drive (which is what i used the first time; it worked fine when i installed 1.14) now it flashes these TWO messages:

MPC2000XL Boot ROM v1.01!
Insert Mpc2000XL Disk!

I dont know what to do. I cant find any other cases of my problem online. I've scanned the forums, i even sent akai an email (they havent responded) nothing! Closest thing I saw was something about a recovery chip, but i cant find anywhere that sells them, nor do i know what to do with it if i even could get one. Its the "Boot ROM" message that really throws me. What does it even mean? Please, somebody help me out cuz right now I have a dead MPC and thats almost $500 down the toilet

Thanks in advance

This is a problem common with many MPC2000XL machines.

Corrupt OS load.

Common !

Have you actually tried a reload of the OS containing floppy disk at this point ?

Many cases on this forum.

Many solutions too.

You are not likely to get a response from those folk.

At best they will simply refer you to a repairer.

The "Recovery Chip" reference is from me.

I have been supplying these now for some time "off list" on a case as needed basis.

Said "Recovery Chip" is a last resort in the event that usual OS reload mechanisms are malfunctioning.

In essence the recovery chip works like this:

1: Your MPC2000XL boots displaying this message:

2: Having disassembled the MPC2000XL and installed a "Recovery Chip"......
..... then setting appropriate main board jumpers.

The MPC2000XL will boot with the following display:

3: A new menu <BOOT> is then presented in the file load screen:

4: The <BOOT> menu option is then activated to present the following screen:

Some main board changes are then performed with the power on and said recovery process is completed.

MPC2000XL stuck in its boot block trying to launch the OS.

I've used Rohan's recovery chip. Works great.

I just wished we (the community) has the recovery components for the DPS16 (hardware jig) and MPC4k/Z (software?).
