No OS disk, no scsi

Hi

this is my first time to post so hello to everyone, I hope I can contribute to this forum over time. I just got a second hand MCP2000 for very cheap and it has no OS disk and I tried to get a SCSI Zipdisk drive which everyone suggests on the net but believe it or not they are impossible to find in Japan and I couldn't find any international store that will deliver to Japan.

does anyone have any suggestions or alternative I can do? Im dying to start learning my mpc.

first things first..

go to the akaipro website and download the mpc 2000 OS (version 1.72) which comes in a standard winzip/winrar archive .. you uncompress that and drag the contents on to a floppy disk.. that disk you put into the mpc just before powering it up.

next.. forget all about zip drives.. they are garbage. They will fail you and you will lose data.

you can use floppy disks to save your songs.. and some day you could get a scsi hard drive, a scsi compactflash card reader (which are very expensive) or since you are in japan it may be possible to get a scsi MO drive for your mpc. those are not needed though but may be useful to you some day...

Even easier than that, OS downloads right above your thread in a drop down menu.

Like other member said, don't bother with SCSI Zip drives (they are no good.) MPC-2000 works with any SCSI MO drives, as long as they are 2.5" disk ones.

I presume you are in Japan, that means you should be able to get used SCSI MO drives and MO disks easy (I don't know whether they are cheap now in Japan, but I am sure you can get it easily in Japan, as MO disk system was very widely used in Japan.) Get 230MB or smaller capacity MO disks. 640MB MO disks won't work with MPC-2000.

So, you can use SCSI 640MB 2.5" MO drive with MPC-2000, and use 230MB MO disks to save & load data.
If you get a USB MO drive for your PC, when you can transfer data between MPC & PC.

I was wondering what a SCSI MO was. What is a SCSI Mo? I know about SCSI zip drives and card readers but I never heard/seen the term SCSI MO. Looks like I might want to get one for my classic 2000.

yeah I have never seen one in person here in north america... because they were more popular over in asia and parts of europe. I think over here we were using zip, jaz, tape drives, etc... at the time.

it stands for something along the lines of "magneto optical" or something close to that.. they are disks sort of like zips but more reliable from what I understand.. and my guess is because they were use more in professional industry rather than mainly home usage. Dont quote me on that though...

I know a few members here use them for their mpc 2000 classics... and they say exactly what I suspected.. they are reliable.

It was very popular in Japan. (MiniDisk was basically MO disk for audio.) It was also popular with old mac system as well.
Search for "SCSI MO drive" or "magneto optical drive" on ebay, you'll always get some items.
Don't get SCSI MO drive for 3.5" MO disks, they do not work with none of MPC or Akai S series samplers, because of larger sector size.
Akai used to sell SCSI MO drive for MPC and Akai S series.
I see old SCSI 2.5" MO drives listed sometimes on eBay for reasonable price. Check eBay often.
In fact, I've listed a MPC compatible SCSI MO drive, SCSI cables (enough to connect both MPC-2000 and MPC-2000XL), and 10 MO disks handled for $100, but no one bid. After that, I decided to keep it.

For your information, most of (if not all) 2.5" SCSI external MO drives work with MPC-2000 classic/XL, 3000, and other SCSI connectable samplers. From my experience, MO drives are much, much better than Zip drives,
MO disk is super reliable; magnetism alone cannot alter (damage) content of MO disks.

Akai branded MO drives seem to be always expensive in eBay.
It really does not have to be Akai MO drive, any 2.5" MO drive with SCSI port can be used with Akai sampler (and other samplers with SCSI port.)
