Resurrecting a dead(?) MPC2000

So okay, I'm trying to bring my old MPC2000 back from the dead. Here's the gist of my problems:

1. Started having problems with samples and songs loading with corrupted data.

2. Removed the stock floppy drive. Tossed it in the trash.

3. Bought and installed a new PC floppy drive. It didn't work. Panicked.

4. Bought a SCSI Zip. MPC refused to boot from it. Panicked.

5. Gave up and bought a Kurzweil K2500. Forgot I owned an MPC.


So now I want to resurrect it and I don't know where to start. Someone at an AKAI repair center told me that the floppy drives in the 2000s are proprietary and the machine won't work without a floppy drive from AKAI. Is he full of crap? Either way, I can't get this thing to boot. Help.

I dont know about the flopply being built by akai. sounds like bs. but I would try booting from zip if you have the os copied to a zip disk. If not find a friend with an mpc and use the copy os feature. once the os is copied to zip, you can boot from that and you dont even need the floppy anymore. if you can get this far, you can at least determine if the cause was really the floppy or something else like a power supply issue or bad ram chips.

Nothin you can do if you have bad data, start over..

Take it back and get another, they are cheap and easily replaceable.

Did u check the jumpers/scsi termination ID?

5. Gave up and bought a Kurzweil K2500. Forgot I owned an MPC.
U gave up too easy

Long before you decided to focus all of your attention on the Kurzweil, I would have suggested that you just send the MPC to an Akai service center for repair. Seems like you had a hard time or you were in over your head. (No disrespect intended.) It would have saved you all of that panickingl. And even though there is a price to be paid for the service, you can't put a price on your sanity and sometimes even your time.

Send it in and see. (Otherwise, how much do you want for it?)

i think he said 300 in another post. the zip drive all u have to do is go into load screen then goto SETUP, then primary loadin device, pick ur scsi id that the zip is on. then u gravy. just have the os on the zip.

Akai is notorious for slow and expensive service (at least to me and the people I know). I put in my own memory, replaced the drives and even replaced my screen and I'm not technical at all. It was that or spend $40 an hour so some kid can remove some screws. Go to the store and buy a $5 floppy and shove it in...I did, and it works fine.....

I don't know if it's the drive however...it might be the O/S....the corrupted files doesn't seem to be a drive issue but Akai's amazing coding team. I learned from this forum and others that using .ALL to save isn't advised...

I've NEVER seen here that ".ALL" is not advised. That's horse radish! (for lack of a better term.) It's in the manual for pete's sake. I don't read 100% of the forums, but who would say such a thing. You save APS and ALL.
PGM's if you wanna mix and match programs.
SEQ for individual sequences.
WAV and SND is self explanatory.

As a side note, if for some reason you want just a replacement floppy, I have one I pulled from an MPC that I'll GIVE you for free if you pay shipping....I have no use for it and would like to see it get a good home if you have a use for it....

Heheheh.... ....Just doing what I can to "help" someone out.....for real, though, man....don't give up on the zip drive.....MUCH better. Actually....essential to really do anything useful.
