MPC2000XL disk drives - how reliable?

recently I more and more experience troubles when reading floppy disks (I have an XL with a built-in disk drive, I assume it's still the original one). I thought it might be the disks that simply get old, or when using new disks, that they simply might have cheaper quality. But my friend said it might be also the disk drive, something that I would not have thought of to be honest. So my question is, does anybody know how likely it is for those disk drives to become faulty at some time? Or has that never happened to you so far (I assume most of you people use some different medium anyway)?

Of course I will also try to read those "faulty" disks in a computer to check if it's really the drive, but at the moment I can't test that so I'm curious to hear if you know something about that...

All floppy drives will die eventually and yours could be up to 12 years old or thereabouts so it wouldnt be surprising if it has failed. Replacements are plentiful and cheap to obtain. You could try cleaning the drive head with a floppy drive cleaner disc and check the rear connections are sound.

I've attested many times to the phenomenal reliability I have had with floppies, sounds like the drive..

Okay thanks for your answers, I tried all 3 diskettes this morning in a computer and they worked fine. Guess I have to replace the drive then which is no problem since I probably have a few of those in my basement... thanks!
