zip drive problem

Hello again,
I gave up trying with the scsi cd rom and I bought an external iomega zip drive 100mb:

I have new problems now.....I connect the drive to the mpc2000 but all I get is ''scsi not ready'' when I try to load/format/delete.....
FYI termination is ON and scsi id 5.

Does anyone know what could be the issue?

the fact that its a zip drive.
search for 'click of death'
then replace the zip with a card reader
hard drive
hxc floppy emulator
floppy drive
or anything other than a zip drive.

I understand that click of death refer to cases that the head is damaged and cannot read the disk.
In my case the issue is that the mpc2k does not recognize the drive as a device, not that cannot read the disk in it.

You went from the Scsi cd rom to Zip drives... It's definitely time to make use of the forums new face palm emoticon.

Is the Zip drive set to terminate on the back? Is it set to the right scsi ID on the back (ID 6 I believe)? Are you turning it on before you turn the mpc on? Now did you accidentally buy a parallel drive instead of a scsi?

SCSI can be a little unpredictable.
If you can get another SCSI cable try that as a duff cable can cause the sort of problem you describe.
Some drives will work with one machine and not with another. I have a couple of zip drives that do this.
Lastly, the dreaded SCSI fuse.
Did you perhaps plug or unplug a SCSI device while the equipment was switched on?
This can cause failure of the fuse which will also cause most SCSI devices to be unrecognised.

Thanks for the reply. The MPC scsi fuses are good because I tried to connect the external scsi cd rom I have and it worked fine, so the fuses are ok.
I was thinking the same for the cable, but later on I connected my scsi cd rom ON the zip drive connection and the zip drive TO the MPC using the cable I used for connecting just the zip drive: The cd rom works fine once again (routing through the zip) but for the zip I get the same: SCSI not ready.
I tend to conclude that either the zip drive is damaged or the zip disk needs to be formatted on a computer before (which is kind of a problem 'cause I ain't got an internal zip drive yet...).

It is definately scsi drive, termination is on and scsi id on 5 and I turn it on before mpc...

yea i can see where you are coming from.

however i kind of hope you don't get this sorted (tough love), because if it encourages you to try another storage option, that is a good thing.

please understand me im not trying to offend you or your choice, i just think this hassle might be a blessing in disguise. there is some good advice in here though, so thanks to those keeping it on topic. i'm out ;]

I would think he just meant he can see how you want to get this sorted out with the stuff you have now, but getting zips out of your MPC life is a necessity really. At some point EVERY zip drive/disk on earth will fail. It's just a matter of when. The storage medium is basically a ticking time bomb. But if you don't hear the "click of death" sound at the moment they die you might have trouble even figuring out if your disk/drive even are operational. Which seems like could be your problem rebelconnection.

If your weren't overseas I'd just have you give me postage and give you a internal zip. Maybe you can find someone in Greece that can give you one or sell it for cheap. Also if I remember my own zip usages in the past, I think if you format the zip on a PC the MPC won't be able to read it. I think I used to format on the XL and then copy to the discs using a USB zip on the PC.

But again Tapedeck's point is clearly saying that you should give up on the zip and look into a CF reader for your storage. It's about the best thing you can do with an older MPC.

Hes on a classic I think, no internal zip. But yeah seriously someone usually tells someone to dump zips a few times a week in this section of the forum. I know theres a novelty to the price/size ratio. But its a joke as a storage medium. Your gonna loose stuff for sure, and switch to floppies or card reader eventually for sure.
