mpc 2000 backlight

Yo the backlight went out on my mpc 2000 lol, anyone know how i can fix this?

If the backlight is dead, replace it, if the backlight inverter is dead, fix it or replace it, if something else is broke, fix it or replace it.

It might help if you have a multimeter, or some other way of testing voltages, so that you can check for correct DC voltage from the power supply into the inverter, and the correct AC voltage from the inverter to the backlight, to determine exactly what is broken.

Or, you could just buy a replacement backlight and see if it fixes it, and risk that the existing backlight is still ok and not the problem.

Did it just go instantly from working well to not working at all, or did it fade out slowly over time (which is normal)?

I don't think this would be normal in case of the 2000 backlight cause its a cold cathode light. The EL foils of other samplers (S1000, MPC3000 and 60 etc) is the one that fade away over the time.

To the OP: If you need to replace the cold cathode tube be VERY VERY careful cause one false move or deassamble to rough and you can throw the display into the garbage cause you'll get those well known black or blank lines in the display.

Here are some photos I made when I thought about getting a coldcathode in another color. I didn't replaced it tho (back then I didn't know how crazy it is to open the diplay without a reason I had luck. No lines accrue)

Those fluoro tubes look like a PITA to deal with/get to, are they available as a spare or replacement part?

Looks like a candidate for an LED replacement, if not readily available.

Replacement CCFL tubes are still available to purchase. Something like this should work:

As peterpiper noted above you must be careful that you do not damage the ribbon cable when changing the CCFL tube. Replacing the tube is not necessarily difficult, just time consuming as you have to bend the leads to fit inside the housing and make sure everything fits correctly.

It is possible to repair missing lines on the display if you have the skill set and tools to reflow the fine pitch soldering of the ribbon assembly. When these types of assemblies are manufactured they use a hot bar to bond the flexible ribbon to the LCD. I've used a very fine point soldering tip to reflow a few solder joints, however it can be more trouble to repair than it's worth as you run the risk of causing other issues.

The inexpensive cost of these tubes is why you have not seen a drop-in LED replacement.

Haha glad its working out well, yeah the cold cathode on the screen was on my list for a while. I actually was gonna replace the screen but it just kept taking longer and longer... Glad you made an account here on the forums
