Having trouble getting 1.20 OS!!!!

Please help!

I have an MPC 2000XL and it has a 1.14OS on it. I got a new card reader from mpcstuff.com and in order to install it, I need the 1.20OS. When I try to load the 1.20OS onto my mpc from a floppy disc that I also purchased from mpcstuff.com, it seems like it loads it successfully, it goes through all the steps.....But I still have the 1.14OS! I even try restarting it, but I STILL have the 1.14OS.

Has this ever happened to you?? What should I try to do? I just want more space to save because the 1.44 MB floppy discs aren't cutting it for me.

You should make sure the 1.20 disk is inserted before you turn the power on.

At the load screen you should see the 2000xl.bin file extension, at that point you may or may not have to select 'do it'.

You should see it give a warning message asking do you really want to change to OS you then you should see it erasing info in 'blocks'.

Finally it should tell you to push any button to restart your mpc and officially load 1.2

Thanks for your quick reply!! Serious, I really appreciate that. BUT -- I've already done exactly the steps you just outlined, and it STILL is 1.14OS. I've even tried it multiple times now....So frustrating.

MPCstuff.com is sending me another 1.20OS floppy because maybe the other one was corrupted. I feel lost, I just wanna get this thing up and running!!

that sounds to me like your disk actually has os 1.14 on it and not 1.2

That could be possible. I don't know, I got it from mpcstuff.com. I'm new to mpc's and I'm starting to question how valid of a company this is. They don't take returns even if things haven't even been used, their instructions they send with products look too simple, and they have an affiliation with a clothing company called "Barslut"....Hmm, I'm starting to ramble here, but it doesn't seem like the most professional company.

Anyways, they were nice enough to send another floppy with the 1.20 OS, so I'll give that another try.

MPCstuff.com is a great company, I never had issues with them and I bought from them several things several times, too me it also sounds like the floppy has version 1.14 instead the latest version, hopefully the replacement disk they sent to you will fix the issue, if not then maybe the ROM in your MB it is defective and it is not being re-written with new OS, so in that case you will need to replace your MB.

Thanks locotesmjr, I guess I'm just frustrated and jumping to conclusions about mpcstuff.com. They also told me that my MB was probably defective. Now it looks like I just have to drop some more money and get a new MB :/

I would not immediately jump to the conclusion that the motherboard is bad.

First off, if you boot the MPC with the OS1.20 disc, (put the disk into the floppy drive before you turn on the MPC, hold REC & OVER DUB buttons, then push the power), the OS listed in the MPC should say OS1.20 and will stay as OS1.20 until the unit is powered off.

Then you would flash to the physical flash OS by going to the Load menu and installing the flash as suggested in this thread.

If it does not boot this way, then your MPC is clearly not loading/reading data from the floppy drive. Could be due to a bad floppy, bad cables, bad floppy drive, possibly bad motherboard, etc. I would check all of these before and possibly purchase replacements before I would buy a "new" motherboard. These parts are certainly much cheaper than a motherboard and can be sourced on eBay for cheaper as they are standard off the shelf computer parts.

At the price of a replacement motherboard at MPC stuff, it would almost be more cost effective to buy a used MPC 2000XL off eBay and salvage parts from it.

What may help others troubleshoot your issue if you can record a video of the screen as you are updating the OS to help identify the issue.

Wow!! You are the man, MPCHunter! Thanks a lot, sounds like you really know your stuff. I can't wait to get home today and try some of these suggestions out.

Hey just want to let you know I got the new 1.20OS disc and I did exactly what you said, MPCHunter, and it worked! I held down RECORD and OVER DUB and started it up and then loaded it like normal and now my mpc has the 1.20OS.
