2000XL midi issue

I've been having trouble with getting my MPC to record and playback multiply MIDI tracks from an external MIDI device such as my keyboard and sound module. At this moment, I have my owners manual, my MPC 2000XL, and a cheap keyboard that I am experimenting with attempting to get this MIDI thing right...

1. I successfully recorded a piano into the sequence I'm working on.
2. After getting that far, I go into anothere MIDI tracks to add a clav.
3. When I play back, I get the melody that I used for the piano, but it's playing the melody intended for the piano in the voice of the clav.

NOTE: I am using the pads to trigger the keyboard.

I read the last page of Chapter 7 in the owner manual several times, and it doesn't totally make sense to me. I'm probably missing something very simple, but I'm not finding the error. Please help!! Thanks!

You need to setup the sound module in some sort of multitimbral mode, and assign the different sounds you want to use to different MIDI channels within the sound module, for example, piano on MIDI channel 1, and clav on MIDI channel 2.

Then you set the first MPC track to the MIDI channel for the piano, MIDI channel 1 in the example above, and the second MPC track to the MIDI channel for the clav.

It sounds like you might be changing the sound from piano to clav in the sound module, on the same/one MIDI channel, rather than setting up the sound module to operate multitimbrally.

If the piano and clav sounds are coming out of different devices, maybe one from the keyboard and one from the sound module, then you need to set the MPC tracks to the MIDI port that each device is connected to, as well as the MIDI channel it responds to.

Just a consumer level Yamaha joint...the kind that comes with speakers at the top. lol

Yeah, I didn't change anything in the keyboard at all. I'll try setting it up again tomorrow. Thanks for the info!!

Yes, you will have to see if there is a multitimbral mode on it, where you can setup different patches to respond to different MIDI channels.
