if it's anything like the 2k classic, then I know exactly what causes it. A very similar message pops up on the 2k when you have this:
-super short sample
-with a long amp envelope
-it triggers fast enough to eat the polyphony.

prime suspects are closed hi hat samples. cuz theyre short and you might be triggering them rapidly in succession.

not sure why I just know it **** things up on the 2k. The solution is to put silent loop tails in your short samples, the 2k can never crash if you have all loop samples. Either that or don't mess with the envelopes on your short samples.

I hope this helps, again this is what I know about using the 2k, I've never used an XL in my life. I'd be really curious to know if this solves the problem on the XL

It's happened mostly when trying to load short samples - so you could be on the money.

MPC-stuff.com dude mentioned I should be using 1.2 OS. So I might try that first.

I used to get this message when I had some faulty hardware installed (in this case a ZIP disk drive). When I changed out to CF and got rid of that peace of shit ZIP the MPC started working properly.

What storage options are you using?

I bought the MPC from a mate who originally bought it from MPC-Stuff.com and has a CF Card (multi) reader installed. I've only been using a 1 gig CF card not any SD cards.

I've reinstalled the OS (1.20) - so far so good. I can't be the RAM as I've done a test on that.
I wonder if it's worth trying OS 1.14 (although I've heard 1.20 is more stable for card readers).
