Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Bif of an odd one:

Just been making an 808 kit on my PC - dithering down a 24bit kit to 16bit/44.1 for loading to MPC.

Then have individually loaded the dithered samples into my 2000xl - one by one, assigning each sound to an individual pad. Has all worked fine, EXCEPT 3 of the sounds, which have mysteriously turned phantom. So all the other sounds are there , playing when I hit their pad, but 3 aren't. In the program page the pads in question show the missing sound is in fact assigned, and more strangely, in the trim window the phantom sounds are present , waveform viewable, but won't play using either the f-key or the pad.

So in summary - the sounds appear assigned correctly, are viewable in trim window, but make no sound at all.

Any ideas? This has happened before when I've loaded a kit - just the odd sound goes phantom. All the sounds are named correctly , numbers and letters only, with less than 8 characters. And, I've double checked in the PC that they were correctly dithered down to 44.1/16bit...

Thanks for any help

Go back and resave the sounds as 44/16. I know, I know, you already saved it as that, but open it up in a wave editor, make sure it plays and re-save it again. NO METADATA.

Re-visiting this as the same problem happened to me today. The problem is that the samples are too short for the MPC sample engine to play them back correctly. This doesn't seem to be a problem on later MPCs.

Minimum sample length seems to be 1368 samples - anything less than that and you lose the audio.

Quick fix is to insert a bit of silence at the end of the sample.

I've had the same thing happen a few days ago with the 2000. I saw the waveform in the trim screen and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't play. But now I recall it was an 808 kit, and it was most likely the closed hi hat. I'll have to load it again to make sure. Thanks for the info. Now Im relieved to know that it wasn't a random bug. :)

When you're saying sounds went "phantom" are you referring to when the file suddenly lists with an "ef." in its name? Because this just happened to me when I tried to transfer some sounds I downloaded onto an SDHC card for my 2KXL. When I put the card back into my MPC, a small, brut significant, number of sounds suddenly had "ef." in the name, and when I tried to load, the MP said it "Could not find file".
