2000xl says nope.

So today I tried to insert a floppy into my mpc's zip drive. The mp just said nope and didn't even let me put it in

I'm new to this mpc game so bare with me. Having said that, to add to the embarrassment; I am old enough that I used this storage media in high school so I really should know better.

Now I have to wait even longer to see if this drive works or not. I just bought a few zip 100 discs on the bay for a couple bucks. I just wanna start sampling damn it.

Nothing to stop you sampling or sequencing in the mean time.
Just means you won't be able to save anything till the zips turn up.

yes... disks are cool, they are fun..... but zip is unreliable (as you can see) and they WILL fail. Zip didn't get outgrown for no reason... it was because they were too unreliable.

What is more reliable? Floppy or Zip?

Can anyone tell me what Floppy's 1.4MB equates to roughly in sample time? Is it just a couple of quick one shots or can you get a bit more in there?

I see guys like Damu still using floppy and making dope music, it doesn't seem to hold him back.

90% of the beats i make on the 2000 or 60 are contained entirely on one disk... that doesn't mean you don't have to do some things to make sure it fits.

you can make sure to trim short... don't leave tails on samples when you only need to hear 1 second of it... sample in mono.... not every sample needs to be in stereo (especially drums and bass) you can always pan those mono sounds later to get a stereo effect.

also, if a song takes up more than 1.44 megs... when saving, save your all sequences and songs file first... and then save the programs and sounds file after... when it says there is not enough room, put in another blank disk and push the save button.... it will span the save across as many disks as it needs.

Alright cool, seems pretty simple. Maybe I will put a floppy in the mp and get an external scsi zip.

Floppy drives are cheap around my parts. External scsi zips are available at reasonable prices also. The main killer is not may 100mb zip discs around here. Guys are selling them at a premium. Floppy discs are cheap as chips.

there is a thread about gotek drives for the 2000 classic... it talks about which ones work.

the thing is, you have a 2000xl i believe so what is the point when you can install an ide to cf adapter for like 2 dollars...
