Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Hello! I've had my 2kxl for around a year and I'm not gonna lie, I've struggled... but I'm determined to get it working and figure out what I'm doing wrong (which has so far turned out to be multiple things...)

One thing is really confusing me right now, and if anyone can help, I'll be :-D

Often, when I try to save my work (using the save all seqs and save all pgms options), it saves the sequences ok, but while saving the wavs, one or more of my other pieces of hardware will go bezerk, and I'll have to hit the panic button on both MPC and controller keyboard, sometimes multiple times, to stop it. When this happens, I get a 'disk write error' and the saving process is interrupted.

Why is the MPC sending anything through the MIDI ports when all I'm trying to do is save to disk?

If I switch off any gear with direct MIDI connections to the MPC, I still get a disk write error, but disconnecting the cables completely solves the problem.

Setup: I have a grey 2kxl with an internal ATAPI non-hot-swappable CF drive. I've got a controller keyboard (novation remote 25) hooked up to MIDI A in and out, and the MIDI thru from the keyboard goes to my other gear. I also have a 707 hooked up to MIDI out B.

Any thoughts? :) I've tried searching online but never come across anyone else having this problem... Thanks!

i suggest midi out from the keyboard to the mpc... then midi out of the mpc to other gear.. not back to the keyboard, unless there is a reason you did it that way.

I tried that configuration and it still produces a disk write error while saving if the cables are connected :(

The old configuration has one plus, that I can hook up an extra 'dead end' piece of hardware to the extra midi out on the keyboard.

not so much help as just experience - sometimes the xl does do crazy stuff when saving. i've had it start playing back memory randomly which gets glitchy fast but is cool as hell.

I think I get this problem from time to time too, but it seems less frequent than your situation. I save and then it's like all my gear gets a note-on or some sort of MIDI information and everything I have hooked up just goes *WHOMP* through the speakers in a quick second, but it's always right after the save finishes and I've never had a write error come up during. I'm thinking that with the way you have your controller set up, you might be getting some sort of MIDI feedback? I have a controller going to my MIDI IN, and then my MIDI OUT 1&2 runs cables out to all my other gear...maybe some of the MIDI controllers we have are sending out data, or maybe you have a piece of gear on OMNI mode or setup to receive MIDI on a channel that's causing problems. I would probably analyze your MIDI situation first, and maybe try hooking up a few different pieces of gear in combination to see if one is the root of the problem.

Actually, try this: don't save a sequence or song or anything containing MIDI data. Just save your sounds or whatever and try it with all your gear hooked up in the way that's been giving you a problem. If you're still getting the same problem, it's probably the MPC. If not, then it's gotta be a MIDI feedback loop.
