Just got a 2000 classic off eBay and I've had a ton of fun chasing problems with it over the first weekend with it, so thought I'd share as my first post.
First problem was that most of the pads were dead. First 2 columns nothing at all. 3rd only had the top button and on the last column all was all fine. Popped the case off to find that the tracks on the sensor sheet pad had corroded from exposure to air/moisture. It followed the edge of the rubber pads (the bit you can't see under the cover) so I think something got trapped under the pads and it ate out the metal.
£6 tube of conductive paint of amazon and some very sketchy looking blobs and all fixed. I've put some "after" photos with the post. Definitely not a long term fix but enough to keep me going until I can get a replacement sensor sheet. (No UK stockists?!?)
Pads 2 and 6 are a bit sensitive (if you hit one too hard the other triggers) still but nothing that can't be worked around for now.
A night of playing about and I thought I was good, until the MPC started locking up at random, SCSI devices started dropping off then I got some popping sounds coming out of the outputs when nothing was playing.
I then trigger a few pads and the samples are crackly and poppy. My hunch was the RAM and a post on here from 2007(!!) pretty much confirmed that. I rebooted and it locked up at the boot screen. Left it overnight and came back, but then started weirding out again.
THEN it actually full on crashed with hex codes on the screen.
I've taken the RAM out of an S2000 and it's behaved itself since.
As a result I'm hooked already, plus I've gotten my hands dirty with this machine. I feel like we've bonded.
