Internal Zip atapi/ide confusion!!!

Ive done a lot of searching on here but cant find the answer to my problem!

Im trying to find a zip drive for my 2kxl.

I found a 100mb atapi/ide but the ide cable ive got doesnt match up with the connector on the board.

The internal atapi/ide connector on the board has 40 pins. The zip drive has 39 pins which connects to the cable ive got.

Do i need to find a zip with 40 pins? or is there a cable that has 40 at one end and 39 at the other?

Or do i need a zip with 34 pins and connect as with the original floppy?

Or am i being a complete moron?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, im wasting far too much time looking into this when i should be making beats/ working!

why dont you get an ide cardreader and buy a 40 female data cable?

zips are known for going corrupt after a while.

because the atapi/IDE port on the motherboard has that extra pin in the middle of the connector.

you can take a razor and cut out the filled in plastic from the cable or even a needle or something just so you can connect it... or find an IDE cable that doesn't have that pin filled in.

I modified the ide cable and got it to fit.

When i have the zip set to master, the start up screen just says wait and never progresses.

When I set it to slave, it detect memory and then says no floppy device.

This says to me that the cable is detecting the different settings therefore it must be the zip drive?

Im using a zip100 ide/atapi, ive read that these dont always work.

Im gonna look for a different zip drive unless anyone has anyother suggestions?

are you using a zip100 disk in the drive also? remember that zip 100 drives dont work with zip 250 disks.

yeh ive been using 100mb discs, ive got an external scsi drive also.

I got it to work, kind of.

everything is running very slow.

Im running os 1.2.


Any ideas?

format the disk on the mpc.. that is the first thing... you dont need os 1.20 for IDE zip drives, you can manage with 1.14.

Firstly thanks for you help.

The discs are already formatted, ive been using them with my scsi zip.

Its just a bit slow on the start up screen, it detects memory then waits for about 1 min. but then its fine.

I dont have a copy of 1.14, will this make a difference and do you know where I can get a copy?

is it possible it is loading any project or anything while you wait?

Installed 1.14 and now it wont recognise the zip drive at all!

Ive got 1.2 back on via my scsi zip drive and it back to running slow, its not loading any pgm's up.

Its bizarre, as normal when u turn it on, it reads mpc 2000 xl, then detecting memory, then says wait and goes to the Load screen, but it just takes ages, like 45 sec-1min on each screen. Once it eventually returns to the main screen it works fine.

Im thoroughly confused! But at least I can work with my machine until I get to the bottom of it.

okay, I'm confused... if you have a scsi zip drive..... why are you using the IDE one??? I mean, you might as well install the IDE one in your PC.

I move around a lot and its a ball ache having to constantly disconnect and reconnect the cables, plus i have to work in the smallest areas so even having to find a place for the external drive is tough!

Personal preference I guess.

well scsi is faster then ide so you should be using that on the mpc... plus it works properly... also look into taking the external zip out of it's enclosure and installing it internally in the mpc... it might be possible.

my mpc says "not ready"

Just get a card reader, they are mad cheap for the xl. It will be a life altering experience.
