Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Hey yall! I came across an MPC 2kXl for the low low in very good condition. Did a bit of restoration and I've decided to integrate it into my studio set up. But in true MPC producer fashion I want to sample from real, hard vinyl. So I have my record player, my mpc ready to go and when I hit shift+sample, the sample page wont come up. Here are my questions:

Is it my cord set up that isn't letting the mpc know there is a place to sample from?
Is it my mpc missing a part or an update that allows me to sample?
Do I need a mixer or preamp for my record player so there is a recognizable frequency?

So many questions, and all the time in the world. If any of you gurus can help me out it will be more than appreciated. Much love

You should always be able to get into the sampling screen no matter what's plugged in. I would guess either your Shift or 4 buttons aren't working, or you're trying to go into the sample screen while the sequence is running which it won't do, you need to stop it first.

Yes, I think that is the problem.
Test the shift button with other numbers. Can you change menus?
Then test the 4button by goin into program (shift&6) then select the program name and hit the 'Open Window' button. Hit the 4button on the name field and see if it work.
