how do you know when your internal zip drive dies??

mpc2000xl.... fully kitted with no effects board.


i think mine has probably died....i have three zip disks that i use for transfer sounds back and forth from my pc to mpc... shit has been lovely for 2 months....

now when i load a zip disk into the zip drive insertion point of the mpc; i get a disk read error.... the is pc formatted... so saying that its mpc formatted is not the problem... the disk can't even load on my pc...

unfortunately i had to experiment.... i took a different disk which was perfectly fine... meaning it loads in my pc zip drive fine.....after that i put that perfectly fine zip into my mpc's zip... bam disk error.... NOW when i take that disk back into my pc....MY PC CAN'T EVEN READ THAT SHIT.... now iam out of two zip disks....

since my pc can't read the **** up zips anymore... i can't even get to format them...

i pretty much nailed it down to the mpcs internal zip **** up my disks...

AND THE ONLY POSSIBILITY I CAN THINK OF... is that MY MPC WAS ON WHEN THE POWER IN MY HOUSE WENT OFF AND CAME BACK ON AFTER 1SECOND.... now a simple coincidental occurence like can **** up my zip drive?????????

is this something i can wait out.... like it'll fix itself..by demagnetizing itself.....

iam quite **** at this point... and i only have one zip disk left... and i sure as hell won't take the risk of putting that in there...

seems like i have to make beats on fruityloops again till i buy a new internal zip for my mpc...

i haven't lost any beats since its all stored on my pc...

have you heard any kind of clicking noise yet?
i had that problem with an old scsi drive.

sounds like sopmethin is in the drive(dust, crumbs, etc)...i had a problem similar to this...u can get internal zips on ebay for about $50.....ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR DISKS ON YOUR PC HARD DRIVE......this way u always have a backup of your work....i usually make hard drive backups of my disks about once a month...that way at the most i would only lose a few weeks of work......

.YEAH!!!!!!.....it clicks then gives up trying to read the disk... and that error on my mpc shows up...

yeah i only keep one beat at a time in my zip... and its always the beat iam working on... and when iam finished with the beat i dump all the .aps, .all, .wav files onto my harddrive....

QUESTION....

are 250mb zipdrives faster than 100mb zipdrives?

I figured such, mane.....I went thru the same thing awhile back and I must've lost at least 12 zips trying to figure the ish out. Your best bet like you said is just to scoop up a new one....a word of advice, make sure go easy on the in and out action on the drive, mane...alot of times its the heads not being parked right and aligned wrong or just wear and tear on one disk thats causing the drive to funk up...kinda like a vcr and a bad cassette tape....My problem is that i'm a bit heavy handed so just heed the words of the great Tenacious D and fukk her gently mane.

The same thing happen to me.. power went out when I was saving.. wouldn't read zip's. I unplugged the SCSI connection from the back of my MPC, plugged it in and it worked fine.

On a side note, if you don't have a surge surpressor I suggest getting one NOW

ares12.... i have a surge protector...but its filled with other stuff, like my pc, souncard, speakers, cable modem, turntable, stereo system.... the mpc is connected directly to the wall.......... ALL I had to do is remove the turntable from the surge protection... and exchange that with the mpc..... yeah... its best iam making these mistakes now... instead of being at a "just blaze" status and not knowing what happened... thats a bad example... cuz my loot would be thick and i'll just cop another mpc...lol

it sorta happened over time like one disk would be fine then when it got to my pc it would click but when I put it back in the mpc it would be fine but when I take it out and put it back in the mpc it woiuld click but work on my pc all the sudden and whatnot. What was frustrating was that it made it hard to pinpoint where exactly the problem was, ya heard? Meanwhile I was screwing up both of my drives in the process. Kinda made me feel like Wil E. Coyote going after that elusive roadrunner mane.
