Yeah, you can't access the 'sample' page while the sequence is running.
If you're using a (DJ) mixer there are various ways of hooking it up so that you can at least listen to the sequence and the sample source together. I pretty much always listen to the sample over the sequence before I actually sample it. My DJ mixer goes into the main mixing board as well as into the MPC and SP1200 (it has multiple outs), but there are other ways of hooking it up that also work.
Still if you need to lay something over a sequence in realtime (scratches for instance), you need another unit or a very good sense of timing so you can keep the sequence running in your head... Most people use multitrack software for this, but you could also do it with a second sampler or even something as simple as a metronome, depending on how far you want to take it.
