Melody or Drum pattern First?

aights i jsut got everything sorted with my mpc and i learned alot of ins and outs of it. when your puttin a beat together i always thought you get ya melody and lace a drum pattern to that. but how do you all do things? and what r your techniques for puttin a beat together, what type of samples u use like length wise etc.

Whichever comes to mind first, beat, melody. Sometimes together as I go. I have no certain length standard. I go a internal zip250/32ram so I pretty much don't even pay attention to the length of my sounds. I use mostly one shot's anyway..

most always i try to find a dope sample/loop then try to fit drums to it...if a find a dope break then i do it the other way around

My way is to first get the samples I want to work it, all samples.
Then I first make a drumbeat..so I feel a bit swing and I hear what tempo I want to work with. Then I freestyle a melody with chopping the samples...and sometimes I fix the drum pattern to the melody and than I got a Javascript beat...thats my formule **** E=MC2

i always start with a drum design, then add the meldoy and then fit the drums precisly! in most cases i have to repeat this several times.

Most of the times I will load like 256 samples all at one time and try to fill up every pad in all 4 programs.. Drums, synth one shots, loops, riffs and everything and I will play from there to see what I feel like making that day.

yea i like how some of you work. i got like a 100mb zip n 32mb so im not really fussed about how long the sample is. ive been reading bits n pieces in magazines about how producers work and its intresting shit. i guess once u know what your doing you can use all types of tekniques but do u think when u start its best to lace the drum pattern to the melody? cos at the minute my drum pattern skills arnt the best but i find when i got a melody i can try different things out but i dont wannna beable to just do it one way i want to beable to do all different types of beats.

i know this might be a stupid question but im just wondering what a one shot is aswell? im not up to speed on all the terminology and im ifrom the uk. also does everyone on this site rap cos ima rapper trynna breakout into producing.

This is mainly for anything that has to with MPC's of course. You know that much already. A one-shot is one hit of a string, one hit of any instrument. Not a loop or riff or a couple of plucks. It is literally one shot of an instrument/sound. One pluck of a guitar string. One pluck of a harp. One blow of a horn. Get it now?

yea i get ya now. so do u put your melodys together on the mpc with one shots. i got some keys n shit which i might load up and see what i can come up with.

Yeah, sometimes, I use the 16 levels rarely but mostly chromatic assigning (64 levels). Works well..

I usuall get it going with the drums then melodies, bass and then just spice up the beat with riffs and stuff and then I allways finish the beat by reworking the drums propperly

yeah , it just depends on what i am feeling. Most of the time it is probably the melody first. I don't use loops that often so i have to play something good then add the drums. but sometimes just feel the need to drop drum track first .

i dont use breaks either so i almost always start with the drum line.i have no idea why but im so anti loop.i guess it makes me feel more like a musician er something
