I am using a Roland SC-88 and a Mo Phatt module w/ a Midiman 49 key controller, would it be better to sample the sounds I need into the MPC or play the melodies thru my controller sequenced thru the MPC? How do you guys do it?

I do both, I found that I can dirty up the sounds a bit more when I sample into my mpc from the triton...but yeah, I do alot of both.

I usually play the keys through the mpc recording them as a midi tracks... but i have sampled sounds when I luckly enough to be holding a friend keyboard for the weekend or something. It does make it sound more grimy when you sample the keys... but effects on some recording gear (cubase... sonar...vs recorders... etc) can mimic this effect also.

and oh yea i gotta nother samplin question hopefully you could help me wit. aight so i got this sample like 4 bars long i added a drum n bass line. i wanna loop it to be like 12 bars...but whenever the 4 or 8 ends it sounds really bad when it loops...any tips as to how to make it flow better... thanks

Well, leroy, find a record (not CD) store, and you can get all sorts of sh!t that they dont make anymore. Diggin like archeologists, baby!

I gotta confess though, I do have a sample CD that I bought when I first started making beats, and I used it a lot. But mostly for ambiance background sh!t and sound effects (birds, cars etc). But for the most part, I think that you get a MUCH MUCH bigger and better feeling of accomplishment by sampling EVERY aspect of a beat. I got one beat that I made entirely off of one corney a$$ synth-hair band 12 inch, and it's a hot track. Don't get me wrong, it's not musically my best produced track, but I am most proud of that beat, just cuz of the sampling effort (and talent ) that went into it. Matter of fact (this is ironic) me and my girl are going diggin later on today when she finally gets her a$$ outta bed (I would be producing instead of posting here, but my MPC's in my bedroom!!! ) Anyone that doesn't appreciate diggin needs to peep the movie Scratch. Near the end it shows you the record store that DJ Shadow digs at, sh!t is INSANE!!! Y'all gotta peep it. There has to be over 400,000 records in this store's basement that this cat gets to dig through on a monthly basis.
sh!t's rediculous, for real. Aight, I'm just rampling on now, so I'm out.

I sample all the sounds I use off my piece of sh!t 100 dollar keyboard into the mpc. Not only can I set the params for them that way (cuz on a $100 keyboard, the sound quality is less than sparkling), but when I load/save the song, the sounds are there, so if I wanna play my beat on another MPC, I don't gotta bring my sh!tty keyboard with me and get laughed at for owning it...LOL.

If memory is an issue, then just play the controller/module combo whilst recording on thy MPC, plus you have a module, which is gonna sound a lot better than my keyboard, so this option might just work out on all aspects for you.

I see a lot of headz on here saying they sample strictly off of Wax and that is cool to me, keeps that vintage sample sound. My question is , besides that vintage sound , are there any other benefits to sampling off of a record versus using a CD. I have Soundforge 6.0 and it is really easy for me to load a song from a CD into the program, catch an isolated sound (pad, kick, snare, hi-hat, etc.) and hilight it in the wave trim, crop, and even add an effect or two if I choose. What are some of your thoughts?

the analog medium more accuratly reporduces the orginal sound. instead of a digital copy of the sound on cd, the sound is carved into a record plate, no d/a a/d conversion. The vinyl is the original sound, as close as you can get to it anyways.

i buy sounds.....the money aint coming out my pockets now days....i just sold a beat for gee and i went out and cop some new sounds....i feel as far as the sample game go im too far behind and i got a lot of people checking for beats now. Im a tweaker more then a sampler and i might buy sounds but like with my keyboards ill tweak and create new drums and snares and what not wo its called my own...to me 300 dollars aint really nothing. i think sampling is a art form but if your not a sampler type of beat maker then you dont look at it that way.....plus alot of yall might not be even doing it right there for you might in the long run have a hella lot of b.s. sounds anyways. but to those who do then do you...

Dude, you are the first person I've heard readily admit that they don't sample sounds. Thanks for the honesty. I am sure everyone has bought or borrowed or burned a friends sound disk at least once for some drums or melodies.

im not a real sample type of guy my music is about 95 percent sample free. I do have a collect of samples but its sounds. i go out and buy drum samples.... i really dont have the time to grab up records or what not just to find a good kick or snare. then next tweak and combine it and compress just to get one new kick. i just save the time and spend the money and get sounds from someone who has been doing the diggin for years and should have a good collection. I respect the fact that diggin is artform but its all how you started out making your beats. my first equipment was a drum machine and a keyboard so i learn to make beats that way. others might started off with a sampler and some records and they when about it all that way and started to enjoy doing it that way. to me diggin is like fishing some days your gona come home with something and somedays your not...both of them i dont like to do. ill tweak sounds that i know that are already good and i just want to add my own touch to it. People want hits and im trying to give it to them thats what i work hard to do.....i could get under my truck and learn the fix everything or i could just take it to the shop and let the so called pros do it....the same with drum sounds for me. I dont care if the next lose respect for me as a beat maker cause im not a beat maker im a producer that just so happens knows how to make beats................Ok I reloaded!
