Man, I'd almost kill for a 16 track 1 inch machine. Damn, why you have to bring that up ?
If we're talkin money no Object for the best sound, tape is great, the maintenence can be a hassle, but nothing digital can touch analog tape yet, but really we are talking 2 inch stereo, that's where you really get the best results, usually coming from a 24 track 2 inch machine, but 16 on one inch is great too. But tape's expensive, so for home use half inch or so is great.
nah man, if I'm paying the bill, everything is going to a multitrack 2 inch machine, then through a nice transformer board like an old neve or API to a 2 track 2 inch (studer please!) then from there to a digital recorder for the CD's. but I'd send the tape to get Vinyl pressed.
but that's a real expensive route, hard to DIY.
a 16 track machine would be really cool to have, I have friends that rock them, and their sound is great. If you can get one and can afford the tape and maintenence then go for it.
Computer wise I prefer Nuendo with RME hardware, kills everything else in terms of sound, and many people are vocal about how good it sounds, including me
PT has a sound, that many people now grew into, so they are used to it, but discerning ears can hear a difference, and then it is down to taste as far as what you like in terms of sound, but even the numbers crush PT, 24 bit internal, vs. the 32 bit internal available on everything not using Digi Hardware.
